Sri Gopinatha Swamy Temple History / Story

Due to no rain, there was drought in the land of Bellary. Vallala king who ruled the country survived by his wife Koppammal, and a son called kopinatan. They had numerous flocks of cows. A man asked king to feed his hunger. King agreed and gave food to that man. He advised the king that the king can get rid off drought if you went to start living in Pandya country.

After Vallala king, his wife and son with the help of some employees and with flocks of cows they started heading towards the Pandya country. In Reddiyarchatiram they stayed and protected cows from there. Due to drought cows were out of food and they were starving. He had prayed to God that if his cows were able to get rid off hunger with grass to eat, he will surrender his life to the almighty. Next day there was huge rain and Cows were able to have plenty of grasses to eat and they were escaped from the hunger. Stick to his words Gopinathan tied his bull with ropes tightly and fell on the horns of bull and died. Seeing this, his mother also died.

A few years later, a landlord from nearest village Kannivadi, came for hunting to this place. The cows left by Gopinathan were looked like deer to the landlord. He tried to hunt them. He could not able to hunt any deer. He inquired about this to an astrologist and he explained the story of Gopinathan. On the same evening a saint appeared in this hill and told the landlord to pray to lord that "build a temple to worship the lord Kanna and contribute cows to the temple". Then he disappeared. This resulted in the construction of this beautiful temple.

What does this story tell us? You can take any imagination and spin it into a tale. Gullible will for it, the smart person will laugh at it. and a skeptic like myself will question it.

Good information.
Praveen the administrator posts information about several Temple. It's very informative but without an cock-and- bull story. I may visit some of those temples.

Dear Prasad ji,
Why cant anyone also post a cock and bull story?

Imagination or superstition or call it anything we like, why not just let it too exists?

Differing views add flavor to life.

There are different sites and forums within the TB site for that kind of story.

But there isnt any harm attaching a purana story to the origin of a temple? Its a common way of relating the story of any temple.
Even the History channel.TV program "UnXplained with William Shatner" talks about the legend of Padmanabha Swamy temple vault being guarded by a Naga mantra in a password format.
William Shatner presents any mystery by taking into the consideration that a folk story or imagination might have some hidden clues.

Why cant we adopt this way of looking at things?
Do we need to be so rigid?
Forum has been so lively with posts by PJ sir but looks as if its all over now with the constant opposition his posts face.

I try to remain as polite as possible but honestly I feel PJ sirs posts has been unfairly targeted.

I just wish we members learn to open up our minds to a multi dimensional way of thinking.
But sadly we never do that.

William shatner is selling a show. History Channel is an entertainment channel, not a history show.
