Many of us are regularly receiving SMSs from service providers/agencies with codes LM-ICICI, AD-PAYTM etc. They use many abbreviations like this. I used to wonder what they stand for and how to recognize them? My search ended up in gathering the following information. Sharing it here for sake of spreading awareness.
These messages originates from bulk SMS providers like way to SMS etc and they do it on behalf of their clients to reach maximum clientele. TRAI has put some regulations on such activities and have restricted the sender’s ID to a minimum of 6 characters.
These characters are used to represent the bulk SMS provider and the place of its origin. That way the first character indicates the service provider and the second one represents the place of origin and the characters after hyphen represents the firm/company which uses the services. Suppose someone in Delhi getting an sms from Paytm through airtel the senders ID will look like this AD-PAYTM. Codes for various service providers in India is like this.
