Egypt’s capital Cairo, on Friday was transformed into a winter wonderland after a “historic” storm in the Middle East brought a rare treat to the city, with local news reports claiming it was Cairo’s first snowfall in 112 years.
Nearly three feet of snow closed roads in and out of Jerusalem, which is set in high hills, and thousands in and around the city were left without power.
The city averages less than an inch of rain each year, and hundreds stopped their walk to work or school to snap pictures of the falling flakes, tweeting their delights.
Snow coated domes and minarets as the record Mideast storm compounded the suffering of Syrian refugees, sent the Israeli army scrambling to dig out stranded motorists and gave Egyptians a rare glimpse of snow in their capital.
