[h=3]Srimad Bhagavatam 11.17.47[/h]
sidan vipro vanig-vrttya
 panyair evapadam taret
khadgena vapadakranto
 na sva-vrttya kathañcana

Translation:

If a brahmana cannot support himself through his regular duties(Teaching & Study of vedas, pooja etc) and is thus suffering, he may adopt the occupation of a merchant and overcome his destitute condition by buying and selling material things. If he continues to suffer extreme poverty even as a merchant, then he may adopt the occupation of a ksatriya, taking sword in hand. But he cannot in any circumstances become like a dog, accepting an ordinary master.

Purport:

Sva-vrttya, or “a dog’s profession,” refers to the sudras, who cannot live without accepting a master. A destitute brahmana who is suffering intolerably may become a merchant and then a ksatriya but may never take the position of a sudra by working in a company or accepting a master. Although a ksatriya is ordinarily considered more elevated than a vaisya, the Lord here recommends that distressed brahmanas first accept the vaisya occupation, since it is not violent.

What is shocking about it?

Are you shocked that dog profession refers to Shudras?

Welcome to our Religion boy.

We preach Samadarshinah..Eka Atma Sarvabhuta Antaratma Blah Blah Blah..Aham Brahmaasmi...but in reality Tvam and Aham are Prtak Prtak(You and I are seperate)

But looking from a different angle why take the word dog profession as an insult?

Dogs are known to be loyal and faithful..so may be Shudras have this quality that the other 3 Varnas lack.

A Brahmana does not have to be loyal to anyone cos he is highest on the food chain..A Kshatriya would be filled with Pride mostly but might suck up to a Brahmana to do some Yagna to gain heaven or to replace Indra.

A Vaishya would be thinking on how to get more money by hook or crook.

So it seems only the Shudra is the one who needs another for sustenance and needs a master and is loyal and faithful.

Anyway these times...almost every caste has an employer..mostly are working in companies.. ..not all are self employed..so majority are technically Shudras by profession cos it clearly says here that one should not work in a company or accept a master/employer.

I guess the whole world has become a K-9 Unit!LOL

Brahmana here is not defined by birth but by his Gunas and Karma.
See B.Gita 4.13

There are no issues, but the translation you have is by the founder of Hare Krishna movement and has more of a religious overtones.

More can be said but one needs background on what is caste/Jaathi/Kula and what is Varna

Hope you continue your quest to learn and get the right meaning
