I was thinking of opening a new thread on this Stotram, on this auspicious day, but luckily (to me,as I am on travels with access to a smartphone only and hence difficult to type for long) I chanced to come across the above and a few other prior posts on this Stotram.

In 2013 during my travels I met a holy man who per his admission had visited almost all the ashrams in the Himalayas. There are thousands of them and there is a lot of variety in the pujas, vratas etc that they do. But one unwritten rule that the inmates of ALL these ashrams in the Himalayas follow, is the recital of the Shiva Mahimna Stotram in the evening sandhya. No other stotram or puja is given as much reverence. In the Vasishta Guys they recite the Vishnu Sahasranamam and Hanuman Chalisa also. In other ashrams like the Sivananda Ashram they additionally recite some other stotra like the Rama Raksha stotra. But the Mahimna Stotram is an indispensable part of the prayer schedule everywhere. The "Catholic" nature of the text can be understood from the fact that Madhusudana Saraswati had written a commentary explaining each sloka in praise of both Lord Shiva and Vishnu. This commentary is an exquisite one, I heartily recommend it to all. In one place MS details the vast variety of sastras that used to be taught in his time.

I had heard about this Stotram before, but did not know the significance. By the blessings of the holy man, I quickly learnt the stotram by heart, and made sure that I recite it at least once in a week, mostly on Sundays.

The episodes of the glory of Lord Shiva referred to in the stotram were ingrained in the minds of Hindus since time I memorial. People who have visited the Elephanta caves near Mumbai would have recognized many of these episodes sculptured there. There are inscriptions in several other places, quoting select verses, dating back to the 5th Cent CE.

The episodes dealt with in the stotram can be found in many of our Puranas. Sometimes the stories can be seen to vary in the details. I have noticed that the LINGA purana versions seem the oldest and the most attractive of them all.

This is a stotram that slowly takes a bhakta from duality to non duality. Hence again, saints have extolled it, saying that, if one learns this one stotra thoroughly, then that is more than enough for salvation.

In one of the yahoo discussion groups, a learnsd scholar quoted some authorities to claim that some of the slokas contain powerful mantras of Lord Shiva embedded. Though I made a note of it as a curiosity, I am not knowledgeable enough to comment further on the matter.

Swami Vivekananda and his Guru Bhagavan Ramakrishna (whose birth day is coming on 8th March) used to extol this stotram. Notably, in his famous address at the Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893, Vivekananda quoted the sloka "Trayii Sankhyam Yogah...." from the Mahimna Stotram to illustrate how in India, the diverse sects were always considered by the learned, as leading to one and the same goal.

hi

this stotram is very famous in gujarat.....especially recited by shri Ramesh Ojha.....very soothing and

pleasant...i listen daily....especially on sivaratri... many gujaratis recite byheart...without book.. thanks

You are right, this stotra is very popular in North India, which makes one wonder why it is not as popular in the South, like the Vishnu Sahasranamam, for example. The phalasriti explicitly says, if you learn it by heart, Lord Shiva will be pleased with you :)

According to Swami Nirmalananda Giri, this stotra is considered by devotees as "Dvitiya Rudram" and hence used in Rudrabhishekam etc.

hi

we did sri shiva mahimna stotram in our USA temple on shivaratri yesterday....whole gujaratis recited

together...this is very important stotram for gujarathi nagar brahmins....i recited myself and enjoyed too..

Shiva Mahimna Stotram is Popular in North India and I have listened to it being chanted before Ganga Aarathi on the banks of Ganga in Paramarth Niketan Ashram in Rishikesh . Ramesh Bai Oza's is one of the best and I am sharing it here

The stotram has immortalized the character of Ravana, while Rama, another Siva Bhakta, doesn't figure at all !

Here is a clipping from a Koodiyattam performance, showing mighty Ravana on the act of lifting Mt. Kailasa, causing agitation in the minds of its residents, when his arrogance was curbed by Lord Shiva pressing down his big toe a little (sloka 12 Amushya.....in the stotram)
