Children of daily wage labourers and barely into their teens, S. Jeevanantham, G. Lalitha and K. Chinniah have faced social challenges yet nurture a dream to succeed in life.

On Thursday, the trio, students of Chennai Corporation School, Arumbakkam, took their first big step by winning the Corporation’s first science reality show that comprised exhibitions and quizzes for students of 92 Corporation Schools.

The three will fly to Singapore to get exposure on latest trends in science and technology.

“I want to become an IAS officer,” said Lalitha. Jeevanantham and Chinniah want to be Army officers and learn the art of innovation to contribute towards India’s defence preparedness by visiting science centres across the world. They will be visiting one in Singapore.

“Now, Corporation school students are motivated enough to achieve in life. Many of them say they want to contribute significantly to the nation,” said Nirmala, a teacher. The science centres established by the Corporation in places such as Triplicane have already triggered the scientific mind in students, she said.

The reality show was quite an emotional event. Such events shape the personality of students apart from inculcating scientific and technological spirit in them, said R. Lalitha, deputy commissioner (education), Chennai Corporation.

Students of Chennai Middle School, Erikarai, who won the second prize, will visit Science Centre in Kolkata. Chennai Middle School, Vadapalani, will visit Visvesvaraya Science and Technological Museum in Bangalore.

Next year, the Corporation will conduct more programmes to promote science education among students in the 284 schools run by the Corporation in the city.
