Virtual Reality is about to take off, and the fact is that for it to be successful, it needs to be accessible and affordable. Oculus, with its full-blown VR solution would be prohibitively expensive, and that’s why mobile Virtual Reality would be where the consumers are at.

Samsung, in a partnership with Oculus unveiled a mobile VR Headset last year. It had released a bigger Gear VR to accomodate its newer phones, and now, it has announced the true successor to the Gear VR.

The first two Gear VR iterations were public prototypes. Literally. Samsung even named them the Innovator Edition in order to attract early adopters and detract long-term buyers.

Now, its latest iteration of the Gear VR is the first consumer edition, and it is much lighter (22% to be precise), and have various additions to make it more comfortable.

On the software side, Samsung has managed to sign up names like Netflix, Twitch, etc so content should start rolling in soon.

It is compatible with Samsung’s roster of flagships, including the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+, S6 and S6 edge.

The clincher, of course, is the price. While earlier iterations of the Gear VR cost a hard-to-stomach $199, now they cost $99, which is much cheaper and in impulse-buy territory.

What do you think? Ready for the Casual VR revolution?

First it was mp3 player with ear plugs, then feature/smart phone with mp3/video and texting and now with VR head set with all these plus map guide and new uses to be identified - all while walking in a busy road oblivious to the surrounding. Life gets more interesting.

Google maps gave a reliable and accurate voice navigation support trying to locate a courier in eldams road, chennai. "300 metres on the right, you are just there." Was quite useful in chennai roads. I am sure new apps will flood the scene for doing things we are not aware of now.
