Smartwatches are inherently tethered devices. They depend on your phones for notifications, Internet and much, much more. But while smartwatches were made for delivering information as quickly as possible, tethering them to a smartphone still limits their usefulness.

This is why Android Wear smartwatches started appearing with GPS, and recently Android Wear smartwatches started supporting WiFi. Now, Google is taking the logical next step with LTE in the next Android Wear update.

This would enable smartwatches to be completely independent. Theoretically, of course, since you would want your phone for longer sessions of usage.

Right now, only one Android Wear smartwatch supports LTE, and that is the LG Urbane 2nd generation LTE variant (That’s a handful). In the future, we may see more LTE-enabled smartwatches.

What do you think? Are smartwatches catching on?
