Residents choose social media route to offer help in railway emergencies

CHENNAI: Residents have taken to social media to offer feedback and help to railways for emergencies like accidents.

'Emergency Readiness in Chennai,' a page or a 'circle' started by the railways on Local Circles, an online networking site, has received tremendous response with more than 4,459 people joining since it opened on March 21.

The aim is to bring together citizens of the city, administration, police, blood banks, hospitals, NGOs, volunteers and anyone who wants to provide and seek assistance in an emergency.

A majority of the members are individuals from different walks of life, including auditors, government servants and students.

A post by Indian Railways shows that in case of "train accidents, natural or other disasters/emergencies in your city, this community will enable real time information broadcast and exchange thereby facilitating faster response/assistance from the local community and administration." It also urges people to share the invitation to join the page to others in Chennai.

The initiative to gather feedback on railway issues on Local Circles was started by BJP's IT Cell. Railways received inputs from 70,000 people on quality of food through a page 'Make Railways Better' in Local Circles in January 2015. Feedback for the railway budget was also gathered in this manner.

Following the success of these attempts, the party's IT cell is working with the railways to start city-specific online community outreach initiatives for emergency response.

The page also allows members, who are approved by the administration, to discuss and debate on issues relating to railways. Sources said the feedback received was sent to the ministry of railways.

"Railways has rail user committees with selected members at divisional level and zonal level to gather feedback about issues related to amenities and service. Online system helps more people to take part," said a railway officer.

Members of Emergency Readiness Response in Chennai have posted that state government officers in departments such as fire and rescue services should also be enlisted. Another member says the team should conduct regular mock exercise/drills and raise a data base on rescue and relief volunteers, medical team, logistic support volunteers, caterers and others.

However, regular commuters feel the group needs to be streamlined as Chennai is vast. K Baskar, a member of the group, said, "People should be grouped under sections like Chengalpet , Gummidipoondi , Tiruvallur, etc., so that in an emergency intimation can be given to people from those sections first."
