[Information Wanted] Request for Oonam date

Namaskaram, and my prayers for your father’s Atma shanti.

Since your father passed away on 24th January 2025, which was Krishna Paksha Dasami thithi, and you follow Yajur Veda paddhati, we’ll go by Yajur traditions to calculate the 6th month Oona Masikam (ஓண மாசிகம்).

You mentioned correctly that the 170th day (which is the day used for 6th Oonam) falls on 12th July 2025, Saturday.

Yes, Saturday is allowed. Some families avoid Tuesdays and Fridays, but Saturday is acceptable in general, especially for Oonams.

As per the Pambu Panchangam (Yajurveda/Vakya tradition), on 12th July 2025, the thithi is:
  • Shukla Paksha Saptami, which is a normal thithi — not Amavasya, Chaturdashi, or Pournami.
So no restriction from thithi angle.
Traditionally, we avoid doing Masikam/Oonams on the following days:
  • Amavasya
  • Pournami
  • Chaturdashi
  • Janma nakshatra of the deceased (Magam)
  • Sometimes, the Grahanam (eclipse) days - none on this date.
12th July doesn’t fall under any of these. Magam nakshatram is not on that day either.

So 12th July 2025 is a fully acceptable date for doing the 6th Oonam.

Please ensure that the tarpanam and pinda daanam are done in the morning before 12 noon, ideally before the apaksha (pradosha time) begins. Follow your family traditions or your regular priest’s instructions for specific timings.

Thank you. Generally after how many days should 6th Oonam to be done?
Some say, 165-180 days, 170-180, 171-180 days.
I am looking to do on July 16 (Wed), which falls on Shashti thithi (Uthratathi).
Also I saw some post where Shashti / Chathurthi thithi should also be avoided. Is July 16 good day?
