Hi Senior Members

Namaskaram to all. I am a new member in this group. I would like to get suggestions and opinions from elders in this group for a thing which is going in my heart for almost 2 years.

I am a Tamil Brahmin (Iyer) woman married to a Kannada Brahmin (Madhwa). I am following all festivals as per Madhwa custom after my marriage happily as I understand after marriage a woman should adhere to the customs followed in the husband family and take it forward.

However being born and brought in a traditional Tamil Brahmin family, I would seek your suggestion in performing Karadayan Nombu. This Nombu is not available in my husband's side custom. I am aware of the significance of this nombu and I would like to do it.

I was not allowed to do it after my marriage as it is not their in their custom and I have not done it for 2 years now. Hence using this forum to seek suggestions and advise from elders if I can do this nombu. Thanks.

KAARADAIYA NONBU;

THIS WILL FALL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE MONTH OF MAASI AND BEGINING OF THE MONTH PANGUNI.. HOWEVER , THIS NONBU SHOULD BE PERFORMED JUST BEFORE THE 'MASI' MONTH

ENDS.THIS IS MAINLY FOR SUMANGALIS AND GIRLS. THIS HAS TO BE PERFORMED AT THE EXACT TIME OF THE BIRTH OF THE MONTH. FOR EXAMPLE IF T HE BIRTH OF THE MONTH TAKES PLACE BEFORE

TWO'O' CLOCK IN THE AFTERNOON SOME WILL TAKE ONLY PLAIN COFFEE IN THE MORNING. IF IT COMES IN THE EVENING HOURS , THEY WILL TAKE LIGHT TIFFEN SUCH AS BEATEN RICE FLAKES,

CHAPPAATHI, SATHUMAAVU.WHICH SHOULD BE COOKED FRESH AND EATEN.

IF THE BIRTH OF THE MONTH FALLS ON NIGHT TIME SOME WILL TAKE MEALS IN THE MORNING AND SOME WILL TAKE TIFFEN ONLY AT NOON. JUST 2 HOURS BEFORE THE BIRTH OF TAMIL MONTH

PANGUNI THOSE WHO PERFORM THIS NONBU WILL TAKE OIL BATH, AND IN SOME FAMILIES AS IT IS MADHA PIRAPPU THARPANAM IS THERE THEY WILL NEVER TAKE OIL BATH.AFTER BEING TAKEN OIL OR

ORDINARY SNAANAM THEY WILL START PREPARING KAARADAI.

IN SOME HOUSES BOTH SWEET (JAGGERY) AND SALT ADAI WILL BE PREPARED. CIRCULAR JAGGERY ADAIS IN THE SHAPE OF VADAIS WILL BE PREPARED. AND ALSO IN SOME HOUSES SOME SEVEN OR

EIGHT JAGGERY ADAIS IN THE SHAPE OF BRICKS.

FOR THE POOJA WE REQUIRE BETEL LEAVES, BETEL NUTS, BUTTER, FLOWERS, PLANTAIN FRUITS,TURMERIC, KUMKUMAM, AND SANDAL PASTE. A YELLOW THREAD (SARADU) WITH A FLOWER TIED IN THE CENTRE.

COUNT THE NUMBER OF SUMANGALIS AND THE GIRLS IN THE HOUSE. DRAW SMALL PATTERNS OF RANGOLI FACING EAST, EQUAL TO THE NUMBER OF PERSONS PRESENT.IF THE NUMBER IS IN ODD NUMBER

DRAW KOLAM TO THE NEXT EVEN NUMBERS. PLACE ON THE RANGOLI KOLAMS A SMALL PLANTAIN LEAF WITH TOP EDGES INTACT.SPRINKLE WATER OVER THESE LEAVES AND PLACE TWO JAGGERY AND 2 SALT ADAI, PLACE SOME BUTTER ON THE LEAVES.

WITHOUT TOUCHING THE LEAVES AND NEAR TO THE LEAVES PLACE 2 BETELS, 2BETEL NUT, ONE PLANTAIN FRUIT AND ONE FLOWER TIED SARADU.

THE WOMAN AND GIRLS PERFORMING THE NONBU , AFTER TAKING BATH, SHOULD WEAR NEW OR FRESHLY WASHED CLOTHES, APPLY KUMKUMAM ON THEIR FOREHEAD, APPLYING SANDAL PASTE ON THEIR

HANDS. WEARING FLOWERS ON THEIR HEADS, THEY SHOULD STAND BEFORE THE PLANTAIN LEAVES,FACING EAST OR NORTH AND PERFORM NEIVEDHYAM SIMULTANEAOUSLY FOR BOTH THE PLANTAIN LEAF AND BETEL LEAVES.

AND TAKE OUT THE YELLOW THREAD AND TIE IT AROUND THEIR NECKS.

DURING NEIVEDHYAM THEY WILL SAY " URUGAATHA VENNAIYUM ORADAIYUM UNDAANAALUM ORUKKALUM ENNAI VITTU EN KANAVAR PRIYAADHIRUKKA VENDUM".THE ELDEST MEMBER OF THAT FAMILY WILL

HAVE TWO SARADU. ONE SHE WILL WEAR AND ANOTHER FOR THE SWAMY PADAM .AND ALSO FOR THE SMALL GIRLS SHE WILL TIE THEM ON THEIR NECKS.ONE SLOKAM IS THERE TO UTTER WHILE TYING THE

SARADU ON THEIR NECK. "DHORAM GRUNNAMI SUBHAGAE SAHARIDHRAM DHARAAM YAHAM BARTHUHU AAYUSHYA SIDHYARTHAM SUPREETHA BAVA SARVADHA"

AFTER GETTING THE BLESSINGS FROM THE ELDERS OF THE HOUSE THEY WILL KEEP ASIDE THE BRICK SHAPPED/ROUND SHAPPED ADAI WITH SOME BUTTER FROM THE LEAF TO BE GIVEN TO THE HUSBAND AND THEN EAT THE ADAIS.

THOSE WHO OBSERVE NONBU SHOULD TAKE ONLY LIGHT TIFFIN ON THAT WHOLE DAY. iF THE NONBU TIME COMES AT 10 A M IN THE MORNING THEY SHOUKD TAKE ONLY TIFFIN ON THAT NIGHT ALSO.

ON THE NEXT DAY MORNING THE LADIES OBSERVING THE NONBU WILL APPLY TURMERIC AND KUMKUMAM ON THE FOREHEAD OF THE COW AND GIVE SOME ADAIS TO THE COW.

IF THERE ARE OBSTACLES THAT PREVENT OBSERVING NONBU IN ONE"S OWN HOUSE THE YELLOW THREAD (SARADU) CAN BE KEPT IN A NEIGHBOUR'S HOUSE WHO WILL BE PERFORMING THE NONBU AND

AFTER THE USUAL POOJA AND NEIVEDHYAM IS OVER IT CAN BE TIED OVER THE NECK UTTERING SLOKAM. YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE BUTTERMILK/CURD ON THE WHOLE DAY.

THIS YEAR IT FALLS ON 14TH MARCH 2018. TIME 7 P M. TO 8 P.M. you may do .there is no harm in doing this.

Namaskarams,

Married women should follow the traditions available in their husband side only. As you said, the karadian nonbu practice is not available in Kannada side. No problem. Don't worry. Do not panick. There must be some-other equivalent nonbu in Kannada side. Kindly discuss with your in-laws, find out the nonbu and perform the same. If you are not able to find out any equal nonbu, then go for Kutthuvilakku pooja which is equal to the karadian nonbu. You can consult your family sastrigal.

Sirs,
The importance of performing KARADAIYA NOMBU has been illustrated elaborately to both new comers as well as to senior women by Mr.Gopalan ji and TBS sir. The married tamil brahmin girls whose husband happens to be MADHA BRAHMIN Boy then
the advise given by Sri TBS is to perform "KUTHUVILAKKU POOJA which is equivalent to KARADAIYA NORBU, PERFORMED LORD SRI LALITHAMBIGAI. A good suggestion indeed.
The very concept of this POOJA BY SAVITHRI is to retrieve life of SATHYAVAN from the death trap clutches of YEMA. First YEMA refused. SHE PRAYED BEFORE HIM. YEMA ADMIRED BY HER PRAYER AND HE ASKED HER TO REQUEST FOR ANY BOON. TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE WORDING OF YEMA the clever tamil girl asked YEMA DHARMA RAJA THAT SHE SHOULD BE BLESSED WITH 100 CHILDREN. YEMA DHARMA RAJA GRANTED HER WISH WITH A BOON WITHOUT EXAMINING THE TRICK IMPOSED IN IT BY SAVITHRI. HOW CAN SHE GET 100 CHILDREN WITHOUT HER HUSBAND SATHYAVAN.THUS SHE GOT BACK HER HUSBAND TOGATHER WITH GETTING BACK VISION TO HER BOTH FATHER AND MOTHER-In-LAWS. IF THERE IS ANY FLAW PLEASE PARDON FOR DIRECTING WRONGLY.

madhvas will do vata savithri vrutham . this comes on 28-06-2018 this year. vata= aala maram. . Madvas will pour water to banyan tree and do pooja to savithri. The same thing some people are doing now asa karadian nonbu. If you are going to do vata savithri vratham on 28th june you need not do now karadiana nonbu.

Sir,

Namaskarams,

Women used to be on fast upto the time of pooja (that is the time the new month begins). Before the new month starts, the pooja is performed and they will take only the karadais to close the upawasam. No meals in between.
