New Delhi: Leaving his cars and convoys behind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a metro ride in Delhi on Saturday. He travelled from Dhaula Kuan to Dwarka where he was going for a function of the National Intelligence Academy.

Modi was accompanied by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Tweeting his experience, Modi thanked E Sreedharan who is the architect of the Delhi Metro.

"Sreedharan ji would always tell me to experience the Delhi Metro. Today I had the opportunity to do so on the way to Dwarka. Really enjoyed the ride. Thanks Delhi Metro. Thanks Sreedharan ji!," he tweeted.

Modi, who was travelling in the metro for the first time, is aid to have taken the Airport Metro line to avoid inconvenience to the public on the route due to security arrangements.
E Sreedharan is the former chief of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and is popularly known as 'Metro man'.

Sreedharan has been responsible for the construction of the Metro rail project in Delhi, which uses some of the most advanced technology in the field of civil, electrical, signalling and telecommunication engineering worldwide.

The swanky Airport Metro Express Line in which Modi travelled, started in February 2011 but was shut for nearly six months on grounds of safety.

On the 22.7 km corridor, the operations started in January at speeds of 30-35 kmph and gradually increased to 60 kmph. The Airport Metro, with six stations, ferries over 15,000 people daily
