Ramanujam enumerated nearly 300 versions of Ramayana I do not know if these 2 "Mythological Novels" are in that list . These Novels are centered on Ravana
In The Book Asura Tale of the Vanquished Anand Nilakantan projects Ravana as உததம புருஷன் rather than a உத்தம வில்லன் !

Ravanan had 10 times capacity to think because of his 10 heads Ravan can really wear multiple hats unlike Srinvasan as observed by SC.The most acceptable reason or the only reason for him to be vanquished is the crime he committed - one listed in the பஞ்ஜமா பாதகம் namely பிறன் மனை கொள்ளல் - hijacking another man's wife. But why did he do that? His thinking was wayward or unbalanced as his 10 heads were placed horizontally upon a single neck can never be balanced

You can see his head position & have q feel of the story by going through the review on this book in link 1.

-- gappa: Review of " Asura : Tale of the Vanquished"

But in the second novel his head gets perfectly bananced as the are placed in a pyramid and not horizontzlly

Namaste Janaki ji,

Welcome to the forums. Ravana is always a fascinating subject. His gnana, vidwatva with music, devotion, his brahminical background and last but not the least, his 10 heads, all inspire a certain awe around him. If interested, please take a look at 'Ravana is really...' thread in the Religion section.

Thanks for these beautiful write-ups on Ravana. One of the questions my daughter frequently asks is from which nose will he blow out and sneeze, should Ravana catch cold? :)

Regards,

Jayashree

There were multiple sensors which were all sending input signals at the same time at high speed. As there was no hub the signals could not be properly routed for analysis by the ten servers sitting on his ten necks. So all the signals got crossed and it was all !@#$%^&*()(*&(^%$@#^. LOL.

Ravanan is popular with children because of his Ten Heads it really kindles their imagination Like you I also had problem with my grand daughter. How many tablets should he take at time if he gets cold !1 or 10 Aspros

Ten heads Ravana is nothing but a myth only. How can a human being have 10 heads? Did he undergo any plastic surgery?

If we still believe that a human being had ten heads, it only shows our level of maturity.

In Vadivelu style : AIYOO AIYOO

Goundamani style is even better:

Adang Koiyala.....Adangkokka Makka!

Ravana, was not a human being. He was an asura right?

And his sister Surpanakha was supposed to be cannibalistic.

Looks he is neither! Interesting He is a Rakshasha !!

broadly speaking they are used interchangeably. If you want to be technically correct they are not the same. Asuras are the progeny of Kasyapa prajapathi with dithi as their mother. These people were given Pathala and their abode/place to live and rule it. So basically Suras/devatas were also progeny of Kasayapa prajapathi through aditi who were given swarga as their abode/place to live and rule. But the asuras always want control over swarga so they try to fight and win over suras/devatas. Example of Asuras are hiranyakasyapa, hiranayaksha and many others. Suras are Indra, Surya/aditya and many others.

Rakashasas are the progeny of Pulastya prajapathi. these were given the duty of protecting the waters. they live on earth as opposed to pathala, where the asuras live. Examples of rakashasa are ravana, kumbhakarna, but still it is very common to call Ravana as ravanasura. Since ravana was a rakashasa he was ruling from Lanka which is on earth.

And his sister Surpanakha was supposed to be cannibalistic.

Not really

A person who practices cannibalism is called a cannibal. The expression "cannibalism" has been extended into zoology to mean one individual of a species consuming all or part of another individual of the same species as food,

She is a Rakshashi. She ate human beings - a different species and not Rakshasas the species she belongs to

May be true for humans But it is possible in the realm of Metaphysics where it is only belief and do not & need not stand scientific or logical scrutiny! Ravana with 10 Heads & Sa(Ravana) with 6 faces (not balanced again ) exists in that realm of metaphysics - Physical laws of equilibrium are not applicable in these situation !

Asura rhymes with Eswara and Ravanasura could have changed to Ravaneswara in common usage in course of time!

Cannibalism by defination invoves species and not caste!

Sani has just completed his peyarchi If the effects of this on me and my family are good then He is "Saneeswaran" If not "Saniasuran"!

It is interesting, only Lord Sani has the dignity of being called 'Eswaran' among all the planets. Does anyone know the reason why?

Dear Jayashree,

This might give you the answer.
