[h=1]Rajnath Singh is the latest: ‘West isn’t best, we had allthe answers’[/h][h=1] [/h][h=1]The Home Minister also asked the students todecide between the “Western ‘dil maange more’ culture” or Indian values, addingthat “dil maange more” was not “Bharat ka sanskar” (Indian culture).

Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday advocated a “comprehensive change in the country’s education system” for students to realise that foreign countries were not the sole repositories of knowledge.

Addressing students at a youth conference in Delhi’s Shri Ram College of Commerce, Singh said that “Bharat” possessed all the fundamentals in its “pracheen granths” (ancient texts) to make the country a “Jagatguru” (world leader).

Rajnath Singh is correct in so far as the ‘dil maange more’ mania is not characteristic of the culture of Bharat.

ॐ ईशा वास्यमिदँ सर्वं यत्किञ्च जगत्यां जगत्।

तेन त्यक्तेन भुञ्जीथा मा गृधः कस्यस्विद्धनम्॥१॥

is what our upanishad advises us.

Dear Sri Sangom,

Can you share the English Translation of quoted verses?

om̐ īśā vāsyamidam̐ sarvaṃ yatkiñca jagatyāṃ jagat|

tena tyaktena bhuñjīthā mā gṛdhaḥ kasyasviddhanam||1||

This is the first SlOka of Isavasyopanishad. It means that since this whole jagat or universe is permeated by Isa or the Lord, you enjoy anything (in this world) being well aware of this fact and with a certain sense of "tyAga" or renunciation; do not cultivate attachments to worldly items, also don't aspire for another's wealth.

Dear Shri Sangomji,

Great Meaning! Thank you

Yesterday there was a Stotram competition in our Gurgaon temple! Boys and girls were reciting various Slokas as part of Competition on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi! The compere Smt Subbulakshmi requested all to learn the meaning of Stotras! Like telling Sarva Vigna karam devam instead of Sarva Vigna Haram devam as a salutation to Lord Ganesa! It changes the meaning completely!

When Tamilians recite, or even write scholarly commentaries on sanskrit slokas, etc., such contradictions are sure to arise. For example there can be a brand new ணாராயணீயம் (NArAyaNeeyam) which possibly was not the title given by Melputhur Narayana Bhattatiri!

In most of the Tamil versions of slokas found in the internet, as also in this forum, similar mistakes will be galore. The fact that the people who take such liberties are not immediarely given divine punishment only goes to prove that either those gods are incapable or are simple zombies who won't bother even if insulted.

BTB, coming to "sarva vighna karam devam...", in the mAnava grihyasUtra II-14 it is stated that

the Vinayakas are four viz. śālakaṭaṅkaṭa, kūśmāṇḍarājaputra, usmita and devayajana. They are evil spirits and people when seized
by them have bad dreams and see in them inauspicious sights such as shaved persons, persons with matted hair or wearing
yellowish garments, camels, hogs, asses, candalas. When seized by them, princes, though capable, do not get their kingdoms ; maidens, though endowed with all accomplishments, cannot secure husbands ; married women have no children or even virtuous wives lose their children in infancy ; husbandmen lose their crops &c. The mAnavagrhya then prescribes propitiatory rites to remove the effects of Vinayaka seizure.

Hence it is true that our present day Ganesha was once a "sarva vighna karan". Most of these grihyasootras are dated to the beginnings of the CE and so, our Ganesha enjoys his popularity as a hero (vighnaharan) after having been a villain (vinAyaka seizure) for how long one doesn't know!

One case not learnt to pronunce a day the other unable to pronunce. First can be rectified. Anyway both get same blessings. Whether one calls him govinda or goyinda.

Asian development bank may fiNancy 5 million $ for the land hanuman bridge to Sri Lanka as part of Buddhist tourist circuit. It is a welcome initiative for the Asian countries to unite under indic traditions and dharmic panths.
