Prayers for the

Hello everyone...I am residing outside India. I recently attended an Athma shanti prayers of my friend's dad. The local priest , conducted the prayers, whom I believe is not a brahmin
He instructed the people to do the Arathi in anti clock wise manner as it is not a subhakariyam. This , I am unable to accept. Is it true everything must be in reverse when doing padayal for the deceased? Even the banana leaf was placed in different angle. Maybe my views are more practical but let me get some expert opinion from my fellow brothers and sisters. Please enlighten me on this topic.
