Pinda Dana at Rameswaram/ Other Tirthas!!!

Hi,
I have some queries regarding Pinda Dana at various Tirthas.W Please forgive my ignorance.hat is the significance of Pinda Dana at Rameswram VS other Tirthas like Venaras, Prayag, Puri, Gaya etc? Is it as per Vedic/shastra or just a custom? When are we suppose to give Pinda Dana at Rameshwaram i.e. any time after father's death or when both the parents are dead?
