"Annapoorani - The Goddess of Food", which was released in theatres in December and aired on Netflix later the same month, faced backlash for depicting the daughter of a Hindu temple priest eating meat.

Netflix has removed an Indian language film from its platform after the movie faced a backlash on social media for depicting the daughter of a Hindu priest eating meat. Hindus are India's largest religious grouping and Hindu priests, as well as their families, are typically vegetarian.

"Annapoorani - The Goddess of Food", a Tamil-language film that was released in theatres in December and aired on Netflix later the same month, was no longer available on the international streaming platform as of Thursday.

Netflix representatives in India did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Wednesday, protesters from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), a Hindu organisation with ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party, shouted slogans against Netflix and the movie at the company's Mumbai office, according to a post on X by VHP spokesperson Shriraj Nair.

The film depicts the daughter of a Hindu temple priest in Tamil Nadu eating meat and later entering a high-stakes cooking contest, where she cooks meat.

"This film ... is intentionally released to hurt Hindu sentiments," Ramesh Solanki, who described himself as the head of an organisation called "Hindu IT Cell," said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Solanki said he had filed a complaint to Mumbai's police about the film, listing several scenes which he said were offensive to Hindus.

The Majority of Hindus are meat eaters. Bengali, Kashmiri, and Saraswat Brahmins are meat eaters, so why all this drama?

Most Indians are not vegetarians; in fact, only 31 per cent are vegetarians, according to The Hindu—CNN-IBN State of the Nation Survey in 2006.
The lowest proportion of vegetarian families are in coastal states such as Kerala (2 per cent), Tamil Nadu (8 per cent), Andhra Pradesh (4 per cent), Orissa (8 per cent) and Bengal (3 per cent).

Case Against Actor Nayanthara For 'Disrespecting Lord Ram' In Tamil Movie 'Annapoorani'

Amid outrage over the movie 'Annapoorani', a case has been registered against actor Nayanthara, the film's director and producers, and Netflix India's content head. The First Information Report, filed by a right-wing outfit in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur, alleges that the accused hurt religious sentiments of Hindus, disrespected Lord Ram and promoted 'love jihad' through the movie.
The FIR was filed at the Omti police station by fringe outfit Hindu Sewa Parishad and names seven accused, including Nayanthara, director Nilesh Krishnaa, producers Jatin Sethi and R Ravindran, and Netflix India's content head Monika Shergill.

The movie, which released in theatres on December 1, began streaming on Netflix on December 29. After a backlash and several police complaints, it has now been pulled from the OTT platform. Two complaints against Nayanthara and others have also been filed in Mumbai by right-wing outfits Bajrang Dal and Hindu IT Cell.

The Jabalpur case, by Hindu Sewa Parishad's founder and president Atul Jeswani, has been filed under Indian Penal Code sections pertaining to promoting enmity among groups on the grounds of religion, and common intent.

Allegations

In the FIR, the Hindu Sewa Parishad alleged that 'Annapoorani' has hurt Hindu religious sentiments, insulted Sanatana Dharma, and made baseless comments against Lord Ram.

It points to certain scenes in the movie, including one where Nayanthara, who plays the daughter of a temple priest, offers namaz wearing a hijab before making biryani. It also claims that, in one segment, a friend of the character played by Nayanthara "brainwashes" her into cutting meat, "claiming that Lord Ram and Goddess Sita also consumed meat".

Mr. Jeswani also alleged that the movie promotes 'love jihad', which is a term used by some right-wing outfits to allege attempted conversion of Hindu girls and women by Muslim men.

Good that they removed the movie.

It is highly insensitive to both Hindu and Muslims.

The movie from what I read apparently has a scene of the actress preforming namaz before cooking biryani apparently under the impression that by doing so makes the biryani more tasty.

Islam has no such practice relating biryani to prayer.
Biryani itself didnt originate in Saudi Arabia.
It originates from Iran.
The movie is promoting a non Sunnah practice of linking biryani with prayer..this comes under bid'ah( innovation in religious matters which has no evidence to support it)

Also the movie wants to insult Hindus vegetarians too by naming it Annapoorni( Hindu Goddess) and making a priest daughter eat meat in it.

The actress who acted in the movie isnt a Hindu or a Muslim by birth.
I wonder if she would have agreed to take the role if it was insulting to her original birth based religion.

In the name of freedom of expression these people have the intention of provoking. There is no freedom to insult or harm others. Be ready to face the consequences.

hi
everything money......its insult to hinduism....name itsself not good......annapoorni is goddess of food worshiped every hindu especially temple located in varanasi...

The below average movie. But if Netflix release after editing they would reach at most benefit as everyone wanted to see.

Coming to the religious matter nobody seems to know anything. From naming of characters to the storytelling everything is blaw blaw and intension is very clear. Initially the boy was introduced as Hindu and suddenly changed to Muslim by saying his mother as Muslim. Also naming of characters of Iyengar family Annapoorani- Sharadha- Subbulakshmi (all the three generations christened wrongly)and only male name as Rangarajan christened correctly. Also people started asking the story told by the boy has not known by Iyengar girl and thus portraying the current Hindu generation as ignorant of religious matters.

As per the actress this is not the first time as she had already faced in 2011 when she was acting as Sita. But the irony is in TN people are supporting now when it faces backlash in North after released in OTT.

Also naming of characters of Iyengar family Annapoorani- Sharadha- Subbulakshmi (all the three generations christened wrongly)and only male name as Rangarajan christened correctly.

Annapooraṇi: Another Name for the goddess Parvati. Clearly Non-Vaisnav Name.
Sharadha: Another name for the Hindu goddess Saraswati. Non-Vaisnav Name.
Subbulakshmi: Goddess Lakshmi, that seems to be a Vaishnav Name.

Can you elaborate on your statement? Thanks
