Recent allegations about a newly independent India under Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru snooping on the kin of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is what conspiracy theorists and spin doctors needed to push their agenda — that Netaji was a greater patriot than Pandit Nehru. The "see-I-told-you" band of people, some of them public intellectuals, have kept the media and political circles abuzz with all sorts of activity ever since.

Netaji Bose, by his own admission in his book, "Indian Struggle" (published in 1935 in London), believed India needed a political system that was a mix of fascism and communism — something that he called samyavad. Netaji made a special trip to Rome in 1935 to present a copy of his book to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, whom he greatly admired and whose ideals he would follow for the rest of his life. Bose's reactionary views naturally brought him into conflict with the pacifist leaders of Congress, most notably Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru. But the friction didn't happen in 1935, it happened much earlier.

In October 1943, Bose announced the formation of the Provisional Government of Free India (Arzi Hukumat-i-Azad Hind). He arbitrarily assumed the titles of head of state, prime minister, and minister for war and foreign affairs — the first he intended to keep when India was liberated. He demanded total submission and fealty from Indians everywhere; anybody who opposed him, his army or government could be executed (some accounts suggest many were indeed tortured or executed on orders of Bose or with his knowledge).

The INA's proclamation put this into writing: "If any person fails to understand the intentions of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind and the Indian National Army, or of our Ally, the Nippon Army, and dares to commit such acts as are itemized hereunder which would hamper the sacred task of emancipating India, he shall be executed or severely punished in accordance with the Criminal Law of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind and the Indian National Army or with the Martial Law of the Nippon Army."

Nevertheless, after Bose "died" in that mysterious air crash in August 1945, Pandit Nehru paid a tribute to his former colleague, "In the struggle for the cause of India's independence he has given his life and has escaped all those troubles which brave soldiers like him have to face in the end. He was not only brave but had deep love for freedom. He believed, rightly or wrongly, that whatever he did was for the independence of India ... Although I personally did not agree with him in many respects, and he left us and formed the Forward Bloc, nobody can doubt his sincerity. He struggled throughout his life for the independence of India, in his own way."

whatever government we had or would have had, we have no reputation or track record for honesty.

if we are doomed to have a corrupt government, it is better it be a democracy. atleast every 5 years, we can vent our feelings, throw one set of rascals out, and get another bunch of scoundrels for 5 years. repeat this cycle forever like we do in tamil nadu between dmk and admk.

hi sir,

i agreed with u......rascala and scoundrels are better than dictactors/blood hunters....

History is almost always cooked up by those who wielded power!!

When I said that Nehru was power hungry & shunted out all the other leaders – princely kingdoms, Aristocrats, Landlords, etc… to ensure he & his family are regarded as the only Indian royal family years back, people in this forum went gaga saying it was wrong.. Now the truth comes out slowly…

How do we know that Netaji & INA are ruthless & tortured people ? – that too when Netaji won the popular vote for the congress president elections against open opposition by Gandhi & Nehru - can you imagine "mere mortal" congressmen voting against the advise of the so called "God Human - Gandhi" - LOL ? Netaji was wildly popular & had he returned would have been the PM for sure. So Nehru had a motive to shunt him out - in all likelihood, got him killed somewhere & covered it up - thats why so much secrecy, so much of spying, etc to ensure no rebellion occurs .. LOL !

How do we know Gandhi & Nehru were so called towering personality in India during the independence struggle & all people adored them??? They were in all likely hood some small timers doing some "unknown dharnas" which were later glorified in our text books – LOL !! British records show that Nehru & Gandhi had no control over the 500+ princely kingdoms & to be simply ignored – LOL !!

One can write a satire on our “cooked up” history & it will become a box office record - LOL!!

Well this is martial law, which is understandable as Netaji was the INA commander.

There are cases where a benevolent dictatorship has worked better than a corrupt dictatorship: Singapore being the prime example.

No one knows what was the vision of Netaji for India post independence.. his goal was first Independence... so this idea that he wanted "dictatorship" is not correct.. Pl note, he was the popularly voted president of Congress, so we cannot say, he was against democracy while at the same time, participating in it...

Nehru & his cohorts lied from head to toe, cooked up many "non existent legends" about himself & foisted on this "appavi nation", his real story is yet to be unraveled - LOL !!

In all likelihood, Netaji would have adopted private enterprise since he detested the communist soviet bloc. and we would NOT have lost 40 yrs - many generations of Indians to utter poverty under the junk socialist regime started by Nehru. Also it is astonishing that people during Independence witnessed the direct massive power of British capitalist economy, and adopted almost all its bureaucracy but subverted everything by pushing all junk socialist policies.. amazing fools ran the country aground... & grinded the people to poverty !!

Self loathing and ill wish for bharat may be the daily prayer for some, but we have hope and faith that good governance and 'achche din' are rising in the eastern sky. Shame slavery and 60 years of nehru gandhi rule has warped the mindset of some. Bharat is a punya bhoomi and karma bhoomi.

Bose, Not Gandhi, Ended British Rule In India: Ambedkar

Excerpts from an article in 'swarajaya' magazine. Link to article and 22 minute audio of the bbc interview are at the end.

In an interview to BBC in February 1955, Babasaheb elucidated the reason why the British left India in 1947. Subsequently, Attlee agreed Netaji was the toughest challenge the Empire faced. Several defence and intelligence experts agreed, too.

"In a no-holds-barred interview with BBC’s Francis Watson in February 1955, Babasaheb elucidated the reason why the British left India in 1947.
“I don’t know how Mr Attlee suddenly agreed to give India independence,” wondered Ambedkar, recalling then British Prime Minister’s decision to agree to the transfer of power in 1947. “That is a secret that he will disclose in his autobiography. None expected that he would do that,” he added.

Ambedkar continued: “The national army that was raised by Subhas Chandra Bose. The British had been ruling the country in the firm belief that whatever may happen in the country or whatever the politicians do, they will never be able to change the loyalty of soldiers. That was one prop on which they were carrying on the administration. And that was completely dashed to pieces. They found that soldiers could be seduced to form a party — a battalion to blow off the British.”

In a discourse in 1943 in Singapore, Bose talked about India requiring a heartless dictator for a long time after liberation. At that point Singapore day by day, Sunday Express (now old), printed his discourse where he said, “So long as there is an outsider, ie the British, these disagreements won’t end. These will continue developing. They will vanish just when an iron dictator manages over India for a long time. For a couple of years at any rate, after the end of British govern in India, there must be a dictatorship…No other constitution can thrive in this nation and it is so to India’s great that she might be controlled by a dictator, regardless …”
By now, Netaji appears to have enjoyed #nazism more than Fascism. In a discourse to understudies of Tokyo University in 1944, Netaji said India needs to have a reasoning that “ought to be a union between national communism (Nazism) and socialism”. Around this time, obviously, any type of agreeableness that existed in the middle of Bose and Pandit Nehru had vanished. While Bose fancied himself as a world leader like Hitler and Mussolini, Pandit Nehru detested both people and their philosophies. He communicated his “extreme abhorrence” for Fascism and said there can be no center way in the middle of fascism and socialism, the previous being an “unrefined and fierce exertion of the industrialist request”.Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Needed Merciless Dictatorship In India

Time is ripe to declassify netaji files. All files in home ministry, pmo, and those in Calcutta. Media and researchers will then get as chance to analyse and vent their feelings.
