Comparing to last 10 years, India is definitely in a world pedestal. A great start wake up for the Tiger who was made to sleep 10 years.

Three years after deregulation, petrol prices still seem to be in the control of the government. Last week, this paper pointed out that the fall in prices of petrol and diesel is less than that of the Indian crude basket. Over the last 18 months, while the Indian crude basket has fallen around 23% in dollar terms, local petrol prices have come down only by 4%.

Part of this wide discrepancy is, of course, explained by the exchange rate. As the first chart shows, when the Indian crude basket is converted into rupees, the fall in prices is smaller. But it is still around 19%.
Then, the Indian crude basket is only a broad benchmark. The starting price for calculating local petrol prices is Arab Gulf Gasoline rates. But asChart 1 shows, these rates too closely track international benchmarks such as Brent crude and Arab Gulf Dubai Fateh.

The typical build-up to local petrol prices from international rates is shown in Chart 2. The first big jump from international to local rates is seen in the price charged by oil marketing companies (OMCs) to their dealers. This mark-up (percentage difference between landed cost of petrol and price charged to dealers) largely comprises inland freight and delivery charges, the marketing cost of OMCs and their marketing margins.

This mark-up has inched up from 5.28% in June 2013 to 14.99% in December asChart 3 shows. After the last bout of excise hikes, it has fallen since OMCs have absorbed the hit. With falling commodity prices, it is unlikely that inland freight rates or marketing costs would have shot up. Thus, it is more probable that OMCs have increased their share of profits from the sale of petrol.

What would have been the price of petrol if this mark-up that OMCs charge to dealers had remained at June 2013 rates? Chart 4points out the possible scenarios. With a 5.2% mark-up and unchanged excise rates (before the 15 November hike), retail prices would fallen to Rs.
57.44, almost Rs.6 lower than current prices. Even with the latest round of excise hikes, the price would have been Rs.62.06, about Rs.1.3 lower than current prices.
To be sure, every company has the right to charge what it wants and increase its profits. But what explains the fact that all three state-owned OMCs have the same mark-up, which implies similar costs and margins, despite being of different sizes? The difference between the final prices ofBharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd (BPCL) and Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOC), which is almost twice its size, is just 4 paise.
Clearly, despite deregulation, the benefits of competition are being denied to Indian petrol consumers.

BJP issues slogans to celebrate one year at centre, Congress says no achievements by govt

New Delhi, May 16 (ANI): While BJP issued two slogans to celebrate completion of one year at centre, Congress said that there are no achievements by the NDA government. Narendra Modi-led NDA government issued two slogans - 'Varsh Ek Kaam Anek' and 'Modi Sarkaar Kaam Lagataar' - which will be used during the grand celebrations to commemorate the completion its first year in the office. While BJP leaders recounted the works done by the central government for the country, congress had differentiating view. Congress leaders said that there is no achievement so far and all the policies are as they were during the UPA regime. BJP, meanwhile, is planning a celebration on May 25 to mark the one year celebration. The selection of the venue has been made keeping in mind the fact that Mathura's Nagla Chandrbhan village happens to be the birth place of Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, the BJP ideologue. BJP has also decided to hold several programmes which would begin on May 25 and conclude on May 31,

Weeding out graft biggest achievement of Modi Government: Arun Jaitley

With the first anniversary of the Narendra Modi government approaching, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday said weeding out corruption has been one of the biggest achievements of the BJP-led dispensation.

"In the past one year, the word 'corruption' has been removed from the political dictionary," he said while launching three social sector schemes here this evening. Jaitley said he can point out at least 100 corruption scandals under the previous Congress-led UPA Government but the Modi dispensation has been able to keep off such controversies. He specifically pointed to the policy of auctioning national resources which has helped achieve a corruption-free administration

Excerpts from the news item: Modi hard-sells his government's success with 'report card' on NDA achievements

Since taking over, the government has taken several strong measures to revive both growth cycle and investor sentiment. In the initial round of its major policy initiatives, the Modi government has allowed foreign direct investment (FDI) in railways and defence sectors, followed by labour reforms, complete deregulation of diesel prices and easing of FDI rules in construction.

The report talks about new investments, which sky-rocketed under the Modi government.

“New investment announcements scaled a new high of Rs 4 trillion during the quarter-ended December 2014,” it said.

Moving ahead on its reforms agenda, the government has also inched closer to its aim of rolling out the Goods and Service Tax (GST) from April 2016. Several other initiatives of the government, including efforts to revive stalled projects, re-schedulement of premium payouts for road ventures and relaxation of environmental clearances have also alleviated some sector-specific concerns.

For the past few years, manufacturing has remained the major area of concern. However, recent industrial data has shown some sort of improvement in it and is likely to be more substantive in the coming months.

“India’s manufacturing and services growth outpaced other BRICS nations in December 2014,” said the report, adding that factory growth in December 2014 was at a two-year high.

In another major move, the Modi government announced defence projects worth Rs 80,000 crore, insisting on a 'make in India' approach rather than purchasing them at a much higher price from other countries.

The report also talked about another major initiative towards social security, highlighting the benefits of the Jan Dhan Yojana.

The report refers in detail to the benefits of the land Bill that the government wants to bring in the Rajya Sabha.

Amid many highs, the government had to face some lows during past 10 months. Whether it is hate speeches by some party leaders or attacks on churches, these lows gave the Opposition and activists ample opportunities for criticism.

The prime minister was forced to take exception after some countries made critical comments against the attacks on churches. He told a Christian religious function in New Delhi in February that his government will not allow any religious group, belonging to the majority or the minority, to incite hatred against others.

Church attacks have stopped because truth is out. All six attacks in delhi and the one in mumbai have nothing to do hindu groups or element, mainstream or fringe.

Wish there is a clear cut report card published one that lists key campaign promises, what is expected to be achieved by first year, what were considered stretch goals for starters and what the actual result is (with an explanation of why the results are the way they are)

It is understandable that major changes require people to engage and no government can bring about changes without the people being fully committed to changes.

I have high hopes for Modi, and his Government in the coming years. However they should publish results directly to the public.

The PM office hearing complaints via its website has turned out to be a joke. I hope there are other areas steps are being taken proactively.

A week ago this special magazine program aired in HBO.

VICE (name of the show) team goes across the world and unearth key issues facing humanity. They provide usually well researched and in-depth reports that main stream media does not care to address.

Here is a report on water crisis in India. The scenes are very disturbing. I hope MODI government champions availability of clean water for all in India.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Rjk8zcYPlA

This is a satire:
Why do we need clean water, we are enamored with urine (human as well as Cow). LOL
We have threads in this site, including a minister promoting urine.

It is only the foreign media that is hung up on clean water.

Sir,

You are right. Any major changes can be accomplished only with the fullest co-operation of general public.

Thanks for sharing the video on India’s Water Crisis- by VICE.

It is sad to see the prevailing water scarcity at Delhi, the capital of India where there is a river Yamuna flowing and is now reported to be the most polluted river. Such rivers get contaminated for various reasons which includes people dumping waste, garbage, besides Industries letting out effluent and house hold waste. And this has been happening for long and I think something serious has to be done by the Government at the Centre as well as the State Government.

If I remember right, in Chennai way back in 2002, the Government of Tamil Nadu considering the serious benefits of saving rain water, enforced a law making it statutory for every house building which has a roof top to have provision for Rain Water Harvesting thus save every drop of water. This scheme proved successful to some extent.

Modi Government has initiated Action Plans to clean the Ganga river. But in spite of all this, it is reported that the river is still getting polluted. Unless the laws are strict with serious penal consequences, nothing can be achieved in India.

Human tendency is we value things only when they are in scarce.:)

In all his election speeches, modi asked the voters to wait for sixty months and he will come with a report card before next election. He has to undo 60 years of misrule and parched earth policy of Congress rule. He is not that kind of politician to cheat public with show development. Good thing is he will not be diverted from the path he has outlined in his speeches and bjp manifesto. His voters will give him time and support till next election.

Modi government scores 7 on 10 for first year's performance: Assocham

New Delhi
: Giving the Modi government 7 out of 10 for its first year's performance, Assocham on Sunday said it still needs to cover some ground on tax issues and a lot more needs to be done on improving ease of doing business.
The industry body said the country's macro-economic situation has improved in the past one year with decline in inflation, stability in currency and attractive financial markets.
"However, the NDA government has to cover some ground in terms of taxation issues, particularly with regard to FIIs' problems on retrospective liabilities and in taking big-ticket infrastructure projects off the ground," the chamber said in a statement

Acche Din Aa Gaye Kya? – A detailed scorecard on one year of Modi Government

The Context
Modi government began on the hope and promise of Acche Din. But, it also came to power riding on huge hype! Hope and hype together can be very difficult to sustain. When the hype is huge – and the Indian cricket team should be able to confirm this – even a few minor failures can be seen as huge disasters. And especially when hope has just been rekindled into a disillusioned mass – Arvind Kejriwal might be able to second this – a few setbacks can make people more sceptical than they ever were previously.

In this context of extreme hope and hype, has the Modi government been able to perform well? Has it lived up to expectations? Has it performed better than previous Indian governments? Are people able to perceive the change for which they brought a new government into power? Are things moving as quickly as one was hoping for, or were our hopes far exceeding the possibilities of an executive rotten with red-tape and corruption? If judged on a scale of 100, what would the Modi government score as of today?

Before any serious business can be done in Rajya Sabha, nda has to get majority. Has to wait till bihar/up elections.

MAY BE ACCHA DIN AAYEGA?.....

I would like to share a message received thro face book:
