Companies across sectors will now have to be more careful while making claims in advertisements, with the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) cracking the whip to ensure stricter actions against misleading ads. With a visible spurt in the number of complaints against such claims, the self regulatory body has now undertaken a new initiative enabling it to call for immediate withdrawal of such advertisements to minimize damage to public interest.
With the new undertaking, which has already come into effect, ASCI has put in place a mechanism wherein it can call for withdrawal of any advertisement that causes "grave public offence or is harmful to a group of individuals, especially vulnerable sections such as women and children."
