Windows 8 was one of the biggest flops in the history of Tech. Microsoft grossly underestimated the extent to which its users will respond to change.

Since then, Microsoft’s then CEO, Steve Ballmer, stepped down and handed over the reigns to Satya Nadella, who has been leading a new Microsoft, one with a focus on Mobile, Cloud and future technologies.
It was only today that we got to see the new manifestation of Microsoft in its full glory.

Microsoft has announced the HoloLens: A Holographic Headset that projects overlays over the real world.
It is a standalone device, meaning it doesn’t need a PC or a Phone to function, unlike the Oculus Rift. It has got a CPU, a GPU and something entirely new which Microsoft created from scratch, the HPU (Holographic Processing Unit). It is the first of its kind.

Using a variety of Sensors, the HPU can process a large amount of data spanning various types, such as Voice, Video, etc quickly.

The HoloLens also has surround Sound, for a truly immersive experience.

Windows 10 has Holographic Support built in, with the necessary APIs already packaged in. Windows 10 was built around Holographic Interfaces, and the HoloLens is the first showcase device for this.

This also means that the HoloLens has the firepower to reach widespread adoption, because Windows 10 has all the necessary tools for Holographic App Development built in, meaning all those who develop for Windows can develop for the HoloLens.

We don’t know any more details about it. It will be released later this year.

We, for one, are pretty excited about the new Microsoft. It is disruptive, refreshing and full of energy. A pair of Goggles that merge the digital world with the real one? We would have expected Google or Apple to do that, not Microsoft. Microsoft is reborn.

What do you think? Will the HoloLens reach widespread adoption? Will it disrupt entire industries?
