The legitimacy of such claims of medicinal properties of cow urine is still a debated issue. Moreover, whether these apparent therapeutic benefits are exclusive to cows (and not other animals) is another question that needs to be answered through further research in the area.It does not mean the US Patent Office recognises or validates the discoveries. It simply means that they recognise CSIR’s rights over them.

There are 3 "punnakkus". Punnakku is penultimate derivative. Coconut Punnakku which is eaten by us like biscuits. (rice punnakku is used as manure. And cow-dung-cake is either used for making Agni or used as disinfectant before drawing rangolis or "chulas" before or after firewood cooking. I don't know why "kumutty" was excluded for this treatment

I thought that vaeppam punnaakku, kadalai punnaakku, were the ones used as manure / pesticide, - varatti is used for only cooking / homam purposes ; the raw cowdung, mixed in water, is used to make a place worthy for lighting a fire either for a homam or for cooking ; cow dung, according to various researches done by Russians a long time ago is said to have not only disinfecting properties, but also protects from harmful radiationThere are 3 "punnakkus". US Patents for medicines from cow urine
Technicaly anybody can apply for a patent howver "foolish" the idea is. The patent commitee only sees if there is a similar patenet awarded in its database. If not it awards it. I have read many books by Ayurveda experts and one such book by Dr reddy publshed by TTD called "Griha vaidyam has lots of recipes with Cows urine. While unprocessed cow urine may be distasteful processed cow urine could have benefits. We are not experts to argue or dispute that. Whoever takes insulin would note that most of the slow acting insulins are devived from Pig (part pig and part Human). so we are not talking about something abominable only because it comes from India.
