Mass killing of dogs in Kerala is leaving everyone horrified

25-08-2015

Even as dog lovers are trying their best to save Frendicoes, an animal welfare NGO in Delhi, a shocking case of brutal killing of around 40 dogs has been reported in Kerala's Kannur.

Reports suggest that around 40 stray dogs died after they were allegedly poisoned. A case was registered under section 11 (1) (l)of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, 1960 Act, police sources said adding an inquiry was launched into the incident based on a complaint by Bina Williams of Kannur in south Indian state of Kerala.

Though the dog catchers were engaged by the panchayat, now they have washed their hands saying the local people had engaged the dog catchers following increasing incidents of stray dogs attacking people. Reena Richards, secretary of the Maharashtra-based Satjeevkaruna Parivar, an animal welfare trust, said the carcasses of the dogs had been dumped in a heap.

Whether any of the animal welfare Associations have arrangements to take away the stray dogs and look after their welfare?

The truth is even now there are thousands of stray dogs, some of them rabid, roaming the towns and villages of Kerala. The government hospitals mostly don't have the anti-rabies vaccine and so people purchase it at the high cost (about Rs. 5000/=) and get the vaccine injected by private doctors. But those who cannot afford the money immediately have nothing to look forward to!

Sir,
What you say is correct. But the so called animal welfare Associations come to the scene just like cinema police arrive after climax.

AWA members are also victims, possibly, of biting stray dogs. So they are not very vociferous.

In Chennai City it is much worse with every street having more number of stray dogs and their population increasing day by day.

It is reported by the Chennai Corporation which conducted census last year that the population of stray dogs in Chennai City limit is around 85,000, but the accuracy of this figure remains questionable.

It is further reported that it is under staffed and there are only limited dog catchers and dog vans. However, they are conducting periodical Anti Rabies Vaccination Drive and are aiming to cover all the stray dogs in a phased manner in all the Zones.

But the fact remains that deaths due to Rabies are reported from time to time.

When I was working in Kanyakumari District, I used to witness everyday 5 to 10 lorries ...each carrying a load of 25 to 30 cows/bullocks going to Kerala for slaughtering.

The practice is still continued and known to every body.

Where did the animal welfare Associations are sleeping?

Are these association members are themselves are beef eaters ?
Konnaal paavam thinnaal pOchchaa ?

May be they will be comfortably seated in their Air Conditioned Cabin and waiting for some animal welfare activist to complain…….. :)

The functions of Animal Welfare Board of India includes ‘To take all such steps as the Board may think fit to ensure that unwanted animals are destroyed by local authorities, whenever it is necessary to do so, either instantaneously or after being rendered insensible to pain or suffering’.

Any idea as to how such unwanted animals are destroyed……..???

Another World Rabies Day has passed by with statistics being espoused about the number of deaths caused by rabies. The fact is that India accounts for 20,000 of the 45,000 deaths due to rabies every year.

With over 95 per cent of the time rabies virus being transmitted through dog bites, the focus must be on the animal too. Doctors say the high number of deaths is due to the low proportion of vaccinated dogs.

According to data provided by the Public Health Foundation of India in its Rabies Control Initiative in Tamil Nadu, 2010, the State has around 4,238 dogs per lakh population.
