Make government service compulsory for IIT, IIM graduates too: a medical student

We owe the government our education, but so do IIT, IIM graduates

By Dr. Shivanand B Hiremath

For several years, compulsory ‘rural service’ for graduates of government medical colleges has been projected as the magic wand which will instantly clear the rot in the government health sector.

This is how rotten it is. India produces one of the highest numbers of medical graduates in the world, yet it suffers a poor doctor-population ratio of 1:1700. At one end of the spectrum is medical tourism which is booming while the other end reflects the woeful state of the public health system. Low expenditure on health, mismanagement of human resources and inertia in policy making and implementation are the prime reasons for the failure of the government health sector. In many states including Karnataka, posts of medical officers, specialist doctors and ancillary services have been vacant for many years. In many government health centres, even basic infrastructure and essential drugs are still a mirage.

Don't these Engineers have social responsibilities to the mother land??

Are they not supposed to contribute their mite for the growth of the nation they belong??

Where is patriotism?

I just remember the following poem of Sir Walter SCott:

IIT and IIM graduates go where their talents get utilised best -The issue is not rural or urban, india or abroad.

There are MBA graduates from top institutions working for FMCG multinationals driving marketing growth there. Similarly auto companies use these .

professionals for sales of cars, mobikes ,trucks, farm equipment like tractors, besides running service centres. Same is true of agricultural inputs like pumps, fertilisers,

seeds etc. The only issue is paying them well to stay back and work in any inhospitable area. Many IIM graduates are working in areas of innovations and driving

change in rural areas out of interest than money.Similar is the issue of utilising engineers in rural issues. If many in core areas are given oppurtunities after

recruitment thru engg services exam like IAS with similar pay and perks, they would go anywhere in india. Our own govt s a waster of work force and does not know

how to tap the enormous talent in engg and management sector. Some MNCs like HUL, ITC and business houses like auto/car makers are using them in

rural areas and reaping the benefits

Thousands of doctors are employed in State Government; but I don't know how many IIMs & IITians are employed in State Govt.?

This has to be voluntary...More applicable for elite IAS who can be deputed in rural areas (not just a District) to drive growth...What will the Engineer do in a rural area...Grow crops??..Looks silly
