Governor of Maharashtra Vidyasagar Rao (R) presents “Sri Shanmukhanand Dr. MS Subbulakshmi Sangeetha Pracharya” special award to the 80 year old Radha Viswanathan, daughter of the Legend carnatic singer and first Bharat Ratna awardee for Music in Mumbai on Sunday (September 14). (Source: PTI) Maharashtra Governor C. V. Rao launched the birth centenary celebrations of legendary vocalist and classical singer M.S. Subbulakshmi at a function here late on Sunday night.
The Shanmukhananda Fine Arts & Sangeetha Sabha Preident V. Shankar said it has also set up a ‘Sri Shanmukhananda Bharat Ratna M. S. Subbulakshmi Sangeetha Pracharya Award’ to honour outstanding music teachers from across the country.

The Shanmukhananda Sabha has organised a four-day music festival in Subbulakshmi’s memory which will end here on Wednesday, said a Sabha coordinator, K. A. Vishwanathan.

To mark the launch of the celebrations, governor Rao felicitated Radha Viswanathan, the 80-year old daughter of the late Subbulakshmi and conferred her with the first Pracharya Award instituted in her mothers’ name.

Radha Viswanathan has been an eminent singer and dancer. Radha accompanied her illustrious mother during her entire career, said K. A. Vishwanathan.

The Sabha has been giving M. S. Subbulakshmi music scholarships to 28 promising students which has now been enhanced to 50 students per year.

Each student will get Rs. 100,000 for three years, as part of the centenary celebrations.

M. S. Subbulakshmi was born on September 16, 1916, at Madurai in the then Madras presidency in a family of artistes, musicians, singers and dancers, and started learning classical music in a young age.

She released her first music recording in 1926 at the age of 10 and gave first public performance in 1927 at the Rockfort temple in Tiruchirapalli.

Later, she moved to Madras where she acted in movies and pursued her vocal music career, giving independent concerts at the age of 17 and travelled to many countries for performances, including the UN in 1966.

Among the national and international awards conferred on M. S. Subbulakshmi include the Bharat Ratna, India’s top civilian award (1998), the Ramon Magsaysay Award (1974) and the Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration (1990).

After a long and glorious career spanning almost eight decades, she died in December 2004 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

I watched the program on a TV channel. It was good.

But taking M S ammA as the ninth Lakshmi after Ashta Lakshmis was a little too much, imho! :)

The voice that immortalised Bhaja Govindam and made the Vishnu Sahasranamam a household chant is 100 years young today. M. S. Subbulakshmi, as we know her, was born in 1916 in Madurai and moved to the city when she was just 16 years old, where she lived till her final days.
After her marriage with T. Sadasivam, the co-founder of Kalki magazine, she moved to a rented house on Big Street in Triplicane near the Mosque where he was living then. “It was only after they made Meera , the film, that they bought Sladen Gardens, which later became Kalki Gardens,” recalls a long-time associate of the family.
The Kalki Garden property was later sold to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. “When he came to the house, an arthi was performed at the puja room on the first floor. At that time he told Sadasivam Mama that she has reached an exalted position where we all try to reach,” he recalled. The Sadasivams have lived in homes on Barnaby Road, Poonamallee High Road and Kotturpuram but the longest was at Kalki Gardens. Unfortunately, none of these properties were made into any kind of memorial or preserved in her memory, the associate rued.
Apart from concert halls, public functions and weddings, the Ganesha temple on Big Street in Triplicane and the Anjaneyar Temple near the Thannithurai market are perhaps two places in the city that M.S. used to frequent with her husband.
“She wouldn’t go anywhere without him. She has not even gone shopping. Her silk saris used to be supplied by one Muthu Chettiyar. From time to time he would bring three 6-yard saris and Amma, Radha and Vijaya Rajendran would wear similar saris to concerts,” he said.
Her first public concert in the city was organised by the Indian Fine arts Society on December 28 at Saundarya Mahal in George Town.
She was accompanied by T. Gururajappa on the violin and her mother on the veena. The Hindu on January 1, 1935 carried an engagements listing about her concert at The Madras Music Conference at the special pavilion behind the Ripon Buildings, People’s Park.
It said: “5.30 to 7.30 p.m. Sri Subbalakshmi of Madura - vocal, Mr. Sankaranarayana Aiyar - violin, Hamsa Damayanti - Mridangam.”

This is the outcome of human worship. No one can stop this. Fortunately, 'Parvathi or Ambal' is left out. The Lakshmi may hit a century in course of time.

Dear Ganesh,

She definitely deserves the title 'Bharat Ratna' but not to be lined up with Ashta Lakshmis! :)

She was the first to receive the highest civilian honour, surpassing Lata Mangeshkar, Bhimsen Joshi and Pandit Ravi Shankar, who received subsequently. It is said that a powerful politician from a Dravidian party was responsible for this.

A Cricketer received similar award due to severe political pressure.
