It is back breaking torture for the tiny tots..Or else for their parents or grand parents...Running a separate service for carrying bags is a very creative solution!!

KANNUR: A primary school here has come up with a unique initiative to ease its students' burden, picking up their schoolbags from designated points in neighbourhoods to allow the children to walk freely to school. GM Upper Primary School in Kattampally sends a special van to pick up the bags of students who don't avail of the bus facility, mainly because of financial constraints.

The school sees the measure as a way of promoting walking among students and reducing dependence on vehicles. Over 300 students enjoy this privilege, said headmistress Gangabai N.

"It's fun walking without a bag," said Fathimathul Rafa, a Class VII student, while searching for her bag in a lot unloaded by the van in the school veranda.

Transport in-charge N M Ravi, the teacher behind the initiative, said, "We introduced the facility last year... as many students found it difficult to carry heavy bags to school."

Though the service is free for now, the school plans to begin charging Rs 15 to 20 per student monthly to meet the expenses. There is, however, no option yet of dropping the bags after school, because of confusion regarding delivery to the collection points without error.
