Kelu Chennai Kelu: Hundreds participate in meet urging government to prepare for floods

Citizens from 20 parts of the city put forward their concerns on preparedness.

8 months ago, Chennai’s floods devastated the city. Thus ensued another flood - of concerns, problems and solutions.
But damage control doesn’t happen overnight. Arappor Iyakkam, a citizen’s forum, took one step forward to address the system with a massive social audit.

Crowdsourced from people from various walks of life, representatives from each locality helped put together a citizen’s report complete with maps and specific problem areas.Chepauk MLA J Anbazhagan was the only MLA present.

On Sunday, the collective organized ‘Kelu Chennai Kelu’ – a massive public hearing in which close to a 1000 people participated.

This large convention of flood-affected Chennai residents, residents associations, students and citizen movements was held to bring to the government’s attention the condition of various waterways in Chennai, flood preparedness and what the government needs to do before the monsoons.

Will the Government ensure swift action by the local authorities ..... as North East Monsoon is expected anytime during October 2016....... we are already in September.?

Greater Chennai unprepared for the monsoon, worried residents stage hunger strike

"The fear is still there. Yesterday, it rained for 40 minutes and everybody panicked.”

More than a thousand residents of Mudichur panchayat in the outskirts of Chennai gathered at Old Perungalathur area for a hunger strike on Sunday, protesting over the ill-preparedness for the impending monsoon.

According to residents, the panchayat is home to many flood-prone areas like Vandalur, PTC quarters, Royappa Nagar and Bharti Nagar. These areas were submerged during last December’s floods with the water level rising up to 14 ft in some places. Most houses in the area had the whole of the ground floor area inundated.

This demonstration comes after residents garnered 1500 signatures and went to the Kanchipuram collector demanding action. The collector reportedly told them that they were waiting for funds from World Bank in July.

Even Adayar river which carries the monsoon rains is not desilted..Looks like another man made calamity is in the offing!!

Many apartments and houses have been constructed in places where rain water naturally accumulates and they will definitely get affected when it rains heavily and this is a curse those people wil have to live with in future and whatevr steps taken by the Governemt will only be cosmetic in nature and will not solve the problem much . Really feel sorry for the people who have invested their hard earned money in apartments and houses in those flood prone areas ( especially people in the ground floor ) .
