Karnataka to fastrack passport verification by linking data with criminal records
| 24 Jul, 2015
BENGALURU: The city regional passport office will be the first in the country to use criminal records from police database to verify the antecedents of passport applicants. When this pilot project materialises this year, not only will police verification take less than a week, persons with criminal records outside their own cities will be found out.
This is part of the larger plan to integrate the databases of the External Affairs Ministry with the Home Ministry's Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS) throughout the country. Since Karnataka has a mature police database - Police IT - the project pilot has come to Bengaluru.
"Once the project gets underway , we can complete verification and send results back within 7 days. We can also find out which police station is not following the time limit," said AM Prasad, ADGP, State Intelligence.
