Karkare’s wife dies, gives life to others by donating organs

By Lata Mishra, Mumbai Mirror | Sep 30, 2014, 01.14 AM IST

26/11 martyr Hemant Karkare's wife, Kavita, had suffered a massive stroke on Saturday and was declared brain dead; her kidneys and liver will be transplated into three critically ill patients.

Kavita Karkare, the wife of slain Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Hemant Karkare, died on Monday after suffering a massive brain haemorrhage on Saturday.

The stroke had left the 57-year-old brain dead, and doctors at Hinduja Hospital took her off ventilator support at 11 am on Monday after the consent of her two daughters, Jui Navare and Sayalee, and son, Aakash.

Kavita, who had strongly criticised police response to the 26/11 attacks that killed 166 people, including her husband, has given new hope to three critically ill patients: her liver and two kidneys were donated to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Jaslok and Hinduja. Her eyes were donated to Parel's Haji Bachooali Eye Bank.

A spokesperson for the Mumbai police said that her funeral would be held at the crematorium on Dr E Moses Road in Worli at 7.30 am on Tuesday.

Kavita's death is the second tragedy to the hit the Karkare family in the past six years. Mumbai ATS chief Hemant Karkare, 53, additional police commissioner Ashok Kamte and senior inspector Vijay Salaskar were killed when Pakistani terrorists opened fire at their vehicle near Cama Hospital on November 26, 2008.

Kavita had later alleged that her husband did not receive adequate backup. He, along with Kamte and Salaskar, were formulating a strategy in Cama Hospital for 40 minutes and had requested help, which she claimed didn't arrive.

The 57-year-old was a professor at a B Ed college in Mumbai, but had stopped working a few months ago. According to a doctor, she was suffering hypertension.

On Saturday morning, she collapsed in her residence at Dadar Hindu Colony and was rushed to Mahim's Hinduja Hospital in a critical condition by Aakash and their neighbours. Kavita did not regain consciousness and was put on aventilator.

She did not respond to treatment and was later declared brain dead. "A CT scan suggested massive bleeding inside her brain," said a doctor, who didn't want to be named as the hospital has not authorised staff to discuss the case.

After Kavita was declared brain dead, the doctors asked her family if they wanted to donate her organs to needy patients. Jui Navare and Sayalee arrived in Mumbai from the US and Germany on Monday morning and they, along with Aakash, gave the consent.

One of her kidneys will be transplanted into a 49-year-old male patient at Hinduja, while the other will be given to a 59-year-old patient in Jaslok. Her liver will be given to a 48-year-old man receiving treatment at Kokilaben Ambani Hospital.

"We are grateful to the family for donating the organs of Kavita Karkare in this difficult time," said Dr Gustad Daver, director of government's Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee, which oversees all organ transplants.
