With Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepping on the gas, the secretaries to the government swung into action on Thursday and asked their joint secretaries and other officers to clear pending files in all departments in three weeks.

The Prime Minister has also asked for a review of all the recommendations of parliamentary committees and to identify proposals that can be implemented within two to three weeks.

Sources said that the PM had asked food minister Ram Vilas Paswan to determine which of the recommendations of the GoM headed by former agriculture minister Sharad Pawar on sugar can be implemented immediately. He also asked agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh for a complete overhaul of the schemes and to focus on small and marginal farmers.

At his meeting on Wednesday with 77 secretaries, Mr Modi urged them to identify 10 laws that are “redundant” and “archaic” and initiate moves for their repeal.

That is some fast action.

It is a good move indeed. A drive to pull ones socks up will ensure removal of red tapism..

Normally, periodical review Meetings will be convened by Heads of the Department and at such Meetings, every issue will be critically reviewed and the reasons for the delay will be looked into and sorted out. If inordinate delay is found due to inaction or for obvious reasons, the Authorities concerned will be pulled up.

In the interest of expeditious disposal of pending files and to ensure speedy implementation of the welfare schemes, such a review/monitoring exercise is just and necessary by the HODs.

Hope such a drive by the Prime Minister will ensure speedy disposal of pending issues atleast in the come days.

We may have good horses. Need of the hour is good jockeys.

‘Repeal at least 10 redundant rules’

Following up on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting on June 4, Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth has asked all government Secretaries to formulate a plan of action “immediately” on sprucing up the workspace and simplifying procedures.

Among the 11 points that Mr. Seth in his letter has asked the Secretaries to act upon, latest by Monday, are “identify and repeal at least 10 rules or processes…that are redundant.”

The PM had told the officials to do away with rules and processes that complicated and delayed decision-making.
