Which is better ? Smartness (I.Q) or Motivation....Looks like during the study days IQ is important but while searching for a job or in job, Motivation matters!

At times a high IQ can actually be a drawback.

When studies comes easily for a high IQ person he or she might actually never give the motivational aspect a thought.

A good student hardly needs to be motivated by anyone or even by their own self cos he/she has high IQ that can make sitting for exams and scoring high just a simple task.

At times a high IQ person is so organized and meticulous that he/she actually plans everything without realizing that this actually makes him or her work within their "own" set of rules and when faced with working environment where he/she has to work outside of their own rules they might not be able to cope.

So some might not really rise fully to the top and not even reach their full potential which is as actually a waste cos they could have contributed much more if they were motivated enough to work outside of their own rules.

College education only gives us a degree but does not teach us how to face the working world/

Even in MBBS all we get from college is a degree but no one taught us doctors how to face stress..how to face demanding patients...how to work with 0 level sleep..how to face nasty consultants.

So I feel to a great extent stressing on academic excellence is totally insufficient...the syllabus needs to include 'working environment' as a subject.

high IQ ,one can excel in academics. many ,even there with high iq have their own set of rules for performing. class lectures caters to the average and not the excellent. hence with good IQ many skip classes due to slow pace of learning and bad face of lecturers of opposite gender .LOL
job performance as everyone knows is a different ball game. academics is just a small part. unless ,the job is challenging and makes demands on high IQ many are non starters . specially repetitive types of jobs are not for high IQ who lose interest after first assignment. we had a harvard graduate in a govt company who found himself out of place and whose talents could not be used for most functions He was ultimately made the glorified chief of training so that the company coud use his credentials instead of him. He went back abroad after couple of years.
effort and motivation come only out of self interest or the whip or fear of losing jobs. everything else is gas

How do ordinary graduates rise in the Corporate Board room while MBA's from Ivy Leagues languish at the bottom..Motivation, attitude plays an important role

I think may be starting from Higher secondary this aspect needs to be stressed...The study should not be a restricted only to MBA courses...

many times freshers with good common sense with no MBA operating on instincts and street smart approach do well working on an idea and implementing while MBAs try to make a business model for implementing the idea and write out alternative business strategies and quantify results for various scenarios and deliver no results.MBAs can only dress well and be glorified salesmen for MNCs . not many are worth much. BTW both my children are MBAs from top schools. LOL
