I heard that December 17 is International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers is observed annually on 17 December by sex workers, their advocates, friends, families and allies. Originally conceived as a memorial and vigil for the victims of the Green River Killer in Seattle Washington, United States (US), it has evolved into an annual international event. The day calls attention to hate crimes committed against sex workers worldwide, as well as the need to remove the social stigma and discrimination that is perpetuated by custom and prohibitionist laws that have made violence against sex workers acceptable.

Regardless of your views of morality of what people do for a living or how they got into that profession I hope you are against (hate) crime of any kind. Or do you think these people in these profession deserve being a victim as punishment for their chosen life style

Dear tks, we both know we have clashed many times, but I stand with you on this one. Without going into too much detail, I am proud to say I do my bit to support these women who deserve as much respect and dignity as the pathivratas of yore, Ahalya, Draupadi, Sita, Tara, and Mandodari.

I am happy to read about International Day To End Violence Against Sex Workers.

Every recognized profession needs their due respect.

As a doctor I had seen male patients dying with AIDS who curse and swear all the sex workers they had been to ..these guys just used to keep swearing all sorts of words in the ward.

One fine day I just told off a patient and told him to stop cursing the sex workers he went too cos both were partners in a transaction.."you agreed for it and went to her..its just that both of you were dumb enough not to use protection"

So you see at the end of the day its blame game again..everyone blames a sex worker.

Even the famous Ajamila story..the guy who married a sex worker..his wife was blamed for everything..I was wondering if he was such an Uttaman how come he could easily succumb to her?

I remember in the 80's there was this Tamil Song where Anuradha was dancing cabaret style with Janakaraj and the song was "Naan Oru Uttaman Illai..Nee Oru Pattini Illai"..this explains the world well..that no one is a saint!

What the world needs is not glorification..all the world needs is respect.

These days there are sex workers from both sexes.
These are human beings making choices out of limited options and due to major mistakes (like running away from home to escape a problem).

As a human being they are no different than you or I.
Violence on these people is often unreported.

With the advent of new technologies, newer ways to make money and newer demand some human beings are subjected to enormous assault out of which they have no way to escape.

I was watching a show that comes on HBO once in a while. Its a show where unsuspecting passengers talk to the Taxi Cab driver and eventually if the story is good the passengers are paid (assuming the passengers provide a release for airing the episode).

Once there was a group of pimps who got into a cab and they were describing how they catch and train and punish these girls. It is horrible.
With demand for porno being at an all time high many sex workers of both sex are subjected to the kind of treatment that many cannot even imagine.

Just like demand for meat and milk (rich cheese, ice cream) has resulted in cruelty beyond imagination for otherwise grazing animals in factory farms, the demand for sex by dysfunctional society has created new forms of exploitation.

There is no way to change any of this easily - the first step is to view the issue with compassion without feeling pity.
I hope no one thinks they are above these people.

Let us revisit our culture; dasis and devadasis were part of the society and were not ostracized. Devadasis got special sevas and respects in temple worship. Visiting parathiar was frowned by tiruvalluvar and other tamils, but parathiars were not hounded and allowed to follow and excel in some professions.

In our culture everybody had a place and space.

Yes you are right everyone gets their space..its just that the location differs....cos you see if a man visited a Devadasi the wife is supposed to be Ok with it and give him(the husband) space and place too..but imagine if a woman visited a Devadasa!LOL....I think she will be confined to only 6 feet underground..well she does get her special space in a grave!

Well atleast that remains constat throughout the history!
No arguement whatever on this topic I guess

Present day laws provide for punishment for any form of violence on anybody for any reason. Even a slap can attract jail sentence.

When ram jethmalani, subramanyam swamy say that exisiting laws can be applied to punish anyone for violence, corruption, cheating and wrong doing.

Violence against any living being should have severe punishment. :whip:

They can be only excommunicated, and not killed. Everyone believed excommunication, from jati and village, is worse then death. All ladies, except the designated, in tamilnadu wanted to be chaste and pathivratas. You can't deny that. This has nothing to do with violence against sex workers.

Stoning to death is a specialty of some, needs no elaboration.

Shouting about and making an observation of one day in a year as International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers is just humiliating those categories of people, I feel. It looks as though on this particular day, nobody should use violence against any sex worker but from the next day onwards, it can be done. Right-thinking Indians should abolish this "day" business borrowed from the west and resolve to follow the non-violent path.

The motto should be not to use violence against sex workers unless and until one or more of them compel anyone to use his/her services, by force. And, like all other good ideas, this motto should be always in everyone's mind.

Do we have any statistics to prove this?Did anyone do any survey on the so called Pativratas to know their hidden desires?

I guess men assume their wives want to be chaste!LOL

There are inner desires..Do you think a woman in Purdah will cease to have attraction to opposite sex just because they are in Purdah!

Incidentally woman wear purdah only to avoid any form of titillation to males

How about the widows in Hindu religion who were destined to widowhood..Though they were not supposed to share their desires openly but they could still have inner desires confined to themselves..But nothing in the open

All have to live as per their kula dharma imbibed by them from their parents and society. Dharma applicable to all insists that evil thoughts are to be abjured. Take your pick.

My heart pains when ever I think of these sex workers. I feel so irritated and disappointed when I see guys teasing, abusing and talking sarcastically to these prostitutes near Hotels here. Keep Bargaining with them and when the deal seem to be not satisfactory, these guys talk nonsense to these girls and move on to other.

The girls have their own issues and are into this profession to meet their ends. Mostly for their family back home.

It is too ironical to sleep with some one for Money and I feel too disturbed when ever I try to feel the feel of these girls who are none other than mere Humans like all of us. These girls are used for fun as if these girls are nothing but Inanimate Sex Objects.

There seem to be very very few guys who value them and respect them while seeking their service.

IMHO, these girls should be respected to the core by the guys who go to them for their sexual needs. Not only respect them but should be sensitive to their feelings/disliking too while indulging with them.

In a society, this profession and these professionals can not expect any sort of high ranking for many obvious and valid reasons.

What ever may be the norms of the human living in human society, IMO, when people associate themselves with sex workers for their satisfaction secretly, they should respect and value these workers and prove themselves to be a true human.

The pathetic thing is, the ground reality would ever continue to be the same no matter how many voice in favor of these sex workers and no matter how many days we mark in many ways to Internationally recognize and incorporate End of Violence Against Sex Workers. The things will be too atrocious, too humiliating, too oppressive and too cruel with these sex workers in the closet of this dark world.

That would be ideal, who could be against that, be against violence of any kind, all 365 days a year, not just one designated day in a year.

But the reality is, nobody cares. These are the most powerless people living in the margins of society. The purpose of a special day like this is not to pat ourselves in the back for one day and go back to business as usual after that. The purpose is to highlight the plight of these people so that the outlook of the society can be moved a little bit and over the years significantly.

Yes, in your culture everybody has a place and space, and anyone who dares to question this "place and space" will be denied any place at all and any space at all. The very term devadasi came to mean prostitute, so much for the place and space, and the special sevas and "respect". Those who led the effort to abolish this vile system rose from their ranks, they didn't care much for the kind of "special seva" and "respect" the disgusting system offered.

Here is a long article about devadasi system, their art, and how their legacy is seen now ....

The Isai Vellalar community which is associated with Sadir is the most powerful community in Tamil Nadu in terms of politics and social status...How can we say that the community is languishing and is at the bottom of heap...May be there are a few who are still wanting to go back to the roots... But the majority of the community looks to be happy with the liberation

The OP is about the violence on sex workers. It is despicable. It is perpetrated on a helpless lot by the powerful visitors-they buy that power. Usually such perpetrators are voyeurs or deviant maniacs. There is another violence which is perpetrated which is the exploitation. That becomes possible because the society just does not bother about this exploitation at all. Standing monuments that disturbs you are the Kamathipura cages in Mumbai with their girls, as your Double Decker passes through that road in the Grant Road area of that metro.

Leaving this topic and going to speak about how the place and space is denied, how the temples and the God sitting there are parties to the crime against the victims falls in the usual charade we see here in this forum. The charade is intellectual pretentions people exhibit with gusto here. They will jump into the fray on any ntopic and start haranguing about the heartless uppersections of the society and how the lower sections are angels and are just dumb and suffer the atrocities.

Here what is said above and the link given here (I read it fully) reminds me of the happy times spent by the iconic Bigriver (a spoilt brat of a rich family) in the company of prostitutes and the surrealist drama in which the greatest of current clutch of politicians, a sishya of Bigriver, "Artist" of the day, went to a prostitute with his friend, enjoyed her company in an orgy and when the payment was demanded, refused to pay, created a rucus there and ran away from there-courtesy Vanavasam by Kavijnar Kannadasan. This is the political group which is said to have stood in the vanguard of anti devadasi movement. Hypocrisy, thy name is Bigriver and all his sishyas including the crowd which keeps posting in the internet forums today.LOL.
