Will reservation for every caste as per population be the solution? May be that is the only way left...But will it work..It means an end to reservations as peer the author..Will this revolution happen...If Patels & Jats join with Brahmins and other disgruntled upper castes such as Vaishyas, Rajputs and Kayasthas it is very much feasible in the North..May be Marathas also will join..In the South Nayars, Reddys, Lingayats can join hands with the Brahmins

Rahul, Arvind and Hardik

- India has made a terrible mess of meritocracy Writing on the Wall - Ashok V. Desai

Let me now come to Hardik. He came out of nowhere and became a conspicuous leader. He attracted thousands of followers; but what impressed me was that he scared the x out of Gujarat government. It arrested him, and sent gangs of police to beat up his followers. This is the government that has faced no significant opposition in 13 years. He scared it.
How did Hardik do it? He picked up an idea whose time has come. Our governments have become cesspits of favouritism. The superior services are managed by their senior members, who make bargains with political leaders; the inferior services are run by coteries or trade unions, which sell jobs by thousands. We are the world's most populous democracy, and it is not entirely useless; it makes coups unnecessary, and keeps violence down. But it is a decrepit democracy; it needs to be renovated.

A quota for Patels will not revamp it. But caste is undesirable, and a quota for poor Patels is better than one for undifferentiated scheduled castes. If Hardik's movement succeeds, it will lead towards a quota for every caste, and make reservations unworkable. Then the system will move towards meritocracy, or towards the paternalism our forebears practised before the British came with their meritocratic ideas. For the moment, we have made a terrible mess of meritocracy; what we have is not worth having. We need a revolution; let the Patels lead it.
