How a rowdy turned over a new leaf – News Today

A society blames an accused whenever a crime takes place but fails to see the wronged society he was born into, never the nights he slept with an empty stomach which led him to snatch money from others or parents who bad-mouthed him, instead of disciplining him when things went awry or the ring leader who was feared by the people but was seen as God by him.

Raja (name changed) from Triplicane, who was an accused in 23 cases (robbery, arrack transport and assault) and jailed numerous times, is now a reformed man and makes ends meet by working in the film industry, opens up to News Today and shares the inside story of gangsters.

It the bounden duty of the society to recognize such persons who refined himself and desired to lead a disciplined life for the rest of his life span. Instead society failed to appreciate his move and maintain distance. This attitude and approach of the society should make such persons frustrated and to revert back his previous attitudes. The society has to come forward and appreciate him besides extending help to lead a decent life and establish himself as one among the refined citizen.

Dhikshita Ji,

You are right. It is the society’s responsibility to accept them and lead or help them to turn a new leaf. Rehabilitating ex-prisoners and integrating them back to the society is the responsibility of the community in general and the Government in particular.

When I was on deputation at Delhi, I lived near 'Tihar Jail’ complex. The prisoners here are trained in handicraft works like hand-woven rugs, etc. There is factory to manufacture wooden furniture which has a demand in the market, besides a bakery selling baked products.

What is important is the feeling of empathy and extending helping hand and encouragement.
