What is Hiranya srartham? Is this Hiranya Srartham performed by the second son for his late father, when he is away and not able join in the srartham performed by his elder brother ? If so the procedure is to be followed for this Hiranya srartham ? Came to know during Mahalaya patcham days also again Hiranya srartham performed. whether both are same or similar?

"hiraNya SrAddham" - HS for short - (not srartham, incidentally) means 'doing SrAddham with hiraNyam or gold, instead of the traditional method of doing a homa, feeding the two brAhmaNas chosen and invited for the SrAddham, offering the piNDa to the deceased parent or forefather, etc. It can be done by anyone. The word 'hiraNya SrAddham' was likely coined when gold or gold coins were the currency, or else, gold piece might have been offered as dakShiNA to the brAhmaNas in those days, but the correct position is not known.
About 40 or 50 years ago, tabras used to resort to HS when the convenience for doing a pucca SrAddha were not available, and, in the case of many tabras then, money was the main problem. Hence, even while inviting the two brAhmaNas, it was customary to make it clear that it would be a HS and not a pucca SrAddha. After the SrAddha rite was over, the brAhmaNas used to be served with coffee and uLundu vaDai; it was believed (and is so written in the smritis) that uLundu or black gram is tantamount to meat and that pitrus require meat for their complete satisfaction! The dakShiNA was slightly more than what the priests used to charge for a pucca SrAddha (with vEShTi + angavastram, full meals) and if my memory serves me right, my father used to offer Rs.2/= to each brAhmaNa, way back in the 1950's.
The contours of HS have also undergone many changes in the intervening period. Whatever your priest or vAdhyAr in Bharuch says will be the final word.

The pitrus have been suffering from malnutrition for centuries, ever since brAhmaNas gave up serving meat in SrAddhams. One can get more details from the book "History of Dharmasastra" by Mahamahopadhyaya Dr. P.V. Kane.

Yes, undoubtedly! That is why IC IR marriages are increasing. Pitrus may be expecting meat will be offered to them by the nb DILs!

Dear sir,
I want to tell something about srartham done by brothers jointly. Dharma Sasrtram srartham to be performed jopintly only if all of them live joint family and eldest being the kartha of that family. it is more explanatery that the wealth is not divided between them and all of them should eat only one samayal. if itiis divided and cooking has done seperately then srartham also to be done by all seperately. this i s DS tells. But for conveneince we are joining in srsrtham and srartham is ndone as common for so many reasons. Now a days Parvana srartham is becoming rarre. Most of us doing only sankalpa srartham for so many reasons. So itiis clear vtaht youbshoukd bdon srartham seperately.
Mahaalaya srartham is diferent from Pratyapthika srartham. In pratyapyhika srartham only pithru,pithamaham, prapitha maha are the pithru devathas. But in Mahalaya srartham Karunya pithrukkal also dded.
doing thr srartham withbhomam or nwithoutbhomam or by offeriung dhakshina only or onlu pithru tharpanam is
depends upon yournwill and situation..But all are permitted in DS.
