Heavy School Bags

Heavy school bags put pressure on the shoulders, vertebrae and the discs between them which leads to a backache, fatigue, numbness in the arms, and in rare cases, chances of developing spinal scoliosis.

Most orthopaedic doctors advise that a child's school bag should not exceed 10 percent of his body weight. Arun Kumar's mother, Aarthi says, "We were very worried ever since Arun Kumar developed the shoulder pain. We had always thought that this problem was associated only with older people. Her doctor has prohibited him from lifting anything heavy including his school bag. Now, we have got him a bag on wheels which he just pulls along."

But the fact is that most children carry a bag weighing more than 25 percent of their body weight which will eventually prove detrimental on their developing bodies.

Safeguard against back-ache

School going children are not only affected by their heavy bags but also the wooden chairs and desks which are not ergonomically designed for their spine. And, since they are seated in a sedentary position all day, there could be a strain on the lower back. In addition, the desks and chairs are made in a standard size, so children with a small build find it difficult to sit at a larger desk, while others might feel cramped at the same.

Lately, there has been a change in the trend with a few schools providing lockers for their students so that they do not have to carry their textbooks or other material everyday. But, if do you find that your child is complaining of a backache or other problems, it is best to discuss it with his class-teacher and find a solution.

Awareness about better posture

One of the best ways to ensure strong back muscles and prevent a backache is to educate your child at home about right posture and how slouching can affect the spine in the long run. Correct him while he sits at the computer or watches the TV, and encourage light exercises as it strengthens the back and arms, there by lowering the chances of getting a backache at such a tender age. - See more at:
