He won a gallantry award yesterday, he is dead today

Salute to the brave Son/brother /father & his entire family

In an encounter that led to the elimination of two militants, the Army has lost the commanding officer of a Rashtriya Rifles unit engaged in counter insurgency operations on Tuesday afternoon in Tral, Jammu and Kashmir.

Details are still to come but Col Munindra Nath Rai, the commanding officer of the 42 RR, was leading the operation when he came under fire. The fire fight, in which both militants were killed, also led to the death head constable Sanjeev Kumar on the spot.

Col Rai, who belongs to the 9 Gorkha Rifles, had been successfully commanding the 42 RR unit engaged in anti militant operations. In fact, the officer was among the youngest of 13 officers who were conferred with the Yudh Seva Medal (YSM) that was announced on the eve of Republic Day on Monday. The YSM is awarded for distinguished service during war time. In the list of 13 officers who got the honour on Monday, Rai was the only officer of the rank of a Colonel.

Officials said that AK 47 rifles and war like stores have been recovered from the militants and the operation was carried out on the basis of a specific intelligence input. Officials said that the two militants eliminated belong to the Hizbul Mujaheddin (HM) and were locals.
