TIRUNELVELI: For over two decades, this tiny hamlet of about 30 families had neither electricity nor drinking water, not even a name. That was before a young bureaucrat took charge as the sub-collector. He helped clear the hurdles to bring both light and water, and they have repaid it by naming the hamlet after him – Vishnu Nagar.
The families in this hamlet at Vagaikulam village in Manthiyoor panchayat of Kadayam Panchayat Union in Tirunelveli district were struggling for over 20 years – they had no electricity, so the whole area used to turn dark after dusk, with only the faint light of oil lamps available for the students. They had no water to drink either, and were forced to walk for a long distance to fetch it.
“Over the years, we had given several petitions to various authorities, but to no avail,” said G Mariappan, a farmer who has been living here for over two decades.

Then one day a few months ago, new Cheranmahadevi sub-collector V Vishnu visited the hamlet while he was there for an inspection. It was the difficulty faced by the students that seemed to have moved him. There was a boy who completed BCom, though there was no power supply to his house, Vishnu pointed out. “We then held meetings with revenue, rural development and electricity departments. There were many related problems like a long-pending land dispute. So we resurveyed the whole area and found a new pathway to the residential area,” he told Express.
All that is in the past. With the support of district collector M Karunakaran, Vishnu and his team managed to bring electricity. A pipeline was laid to bring them drinking water.
Now many from this tiny hamlet, like Manikandan, a youth, and K Manimegalai, a college student, recalled how they struggled to study with just the faint light of the oil lamps. “He has a special place in our hearts for having taken the efforts to make our lives better,” both said unanimously.
As a mark of gratitude, the families there decided to name the hamlet after him. Vishnu was understandably hesitant, but the people were adamant. There now stands a clean white board that reads Vishnu Nagar.
For Vishnu, a native of Kochi, Kerala, who cleared the civil service test in 2011 with a high rank of 34 in the first attempt, this was perhaps an automatic progression of his career. Son of a railway guard, N Venugopalan, Vishnu studied at NIT, Tiruchy. He then worked in a multinational company in Chicago, before returning home.
