The Brahmins of Tamilnadu are a miserable lot,
No better than the pundits of J&K who had to vacate their slot
For every known and unknown evil under the sun,
Brahmins are said to be the cause and I say this not for fun.
As one who had most of my schooling (and therefore) all of my college education in the period of DMK rule I share some of your apprehensions about the future of the community. Our family moved out of the Agraharam (from a village 500 km away) to the city during my grandfather's time and we (from the time of my father) have had a complete city upbringing and I therefore have no knowledge about the situation prevailing in villages which may be as bad as you describe. This is purely my feeling and it is upto you to agree with me or disagree with me. My family is an example of having vacated our native village for want of a safe future for our children, even though there was no political force behind it.
.On Caldwell and his comment.
You (rgurus avargal) are obviously well versed in Tamil and surely know that Avvaiyaar uses the denomination 'Koti' (crore) in 'Aathichudi'.
I have read that Al Biruni who accompanied Mahmud Ghazni to India ridiculed the use of 'Koti' by Hindus saying that the Roman use of 'M' for thousand as the highest denomination for counting was practical and sensible.
It is quite true. The Avvaiyar padal using four ‘Koti‘s is a famous one.The point is that 'koti' was in use in ancient India in North and South.
