Sri Rama Navami, one of the most important Hindu festivals, is celebrated across the country to commemorate the birth of Lord Sri Rama, the 7th incarnation of the Dasavatara of Lord Vishnu. Sri Rama Navami is celebrated in grand galore and fervor. In addition to the birth anniversary of Sri Rama, it is believed that it is the date of wedding of Lord Rama and Sita Devi. That’s why, Sri Sita Rama Kalyanam is also performed in a grand way on this auspicious day.

Sri Rama Navami is celebrated on the 9[SUP]th[/SUP] day of the bright half of the moon (Sukhla Paksha Navami) in the Hindu month of Chaitra. Celebrations begin with a prayer to the Sun in the morning and special prayers are performed at midday. Temples of Rama have special services and bhajans sessions throughout the day. Rama temples across the country and the world are crowded with devotees to seek divine blessings. In northern India, Ramanavami procession is one of the main attractions. In a gaily decorated chariot, four persons are dressed up as Rama, Lakhmana, Sita and Hanuman accompanied by Rama’s soldiers.

In different regions, Sri Rama Navami is celebrated in a variety of ways. In some regions, on this auspicious day, devotees fast. The main objective of the fast is to seek perfection as a human being. Devotees perform elaborate pooja and chant the name of Rama. Thousands of devotees take ritual baths in sacred places like Ayodhya, Ujjain and Rameshwaram.

In most of the Rama temples across the country, to mark the festival, poor feeding and various welfare activities are held. Devotees involve in extensive bhajans. Continuous recitals of Sundara Kanda or Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam, Akhanda Nama Japa (the mass recital of divine chanting) take place in temples. Rama is one of the most sung about deities in classical music and literature. So, 10 days musical programs are organized. Many places in North India, fairs are hosted in connection with the festival and culminate with Spectacular fireworks.

On this day Panakam (Sweet drink prepared with jaggery), Majjiga (Spiced Buttermilk) Vadapappu (soaked Moong dal with grated coconut, grated raw mango, salt, chopped green chilies) is offered as Naivedyam for Lord Rama. All these have a refreshing effect and act as great coolants during these sunny days!

Efficacy of Lord Rama

The Ramayana has been sung and resung in all Indian languages and dialects. It is started by Valmiki in Sanskrit and was continued by Tulsidas in Hindi, by Kamban in Tamil, by Ramanujan in Malayalam, by Krittivasa in Bengali and Madhav Kambali in Assamia and in fact, in almost every Indian language. The various tribal groups too have sung the story of Ramayana in their dialects. Besides, the Ramayana has crossed the boundaries of India. In Indonesia, Rama and Sita are great cultural standard bearers.

Rama is known for his prosperous and righteous reign and Ramrajya, his reign has become synonymous with an era of peace and prosperity. Cutting across all barriers of province, language, caste or sect, Sri Rama reigns supreme to this day in the hearts of our people. In many northern parts of India, mutual greetings take the form of Jay Ramji Ki.

The secret of unique greatness of Rama is his personality. He is called Maryaada-Purushottama means that never deviated from the norms set by Dharma. He is the role model of every human relationship –an ideal son, an ideal brother, an ideal husband, an ideal disciple, an ideal friend, an ideal kind and even an ideal foe.

Irrespective of country, race or religion, Sri Rama Navami is an event worth of remembrance by everyone who cherished the time honored sublime values of human culture and civilization.

On this auspicious day, don’t just worship him. Emulate him too. Have a blessed Sri Rama Navami.
