Gayatri Mantras

What is a Gayatri mantra, It is a jewel among the treasures that is handed down from generation to generation. To be initiated into this sacred mantra is a great privilege. The sound or even the thought of the Gayatri's verse sets grace in action. Those who are called by her are initiated into her power by the Master.

The Gayatri Mantra is first recorded in the Rig Veda (iii, 62, 10) which was written in Sanskrit about 2500 to 3500 years ago, and by some reports, the mantra may have been chanted for many generations before that. Gayatri Mantra is a highly revered mantra in Hinduism, second only to the mantra Om. Since all the other three Vedas contain much material rearranged from the Rig Veda, the Gayatri mantra is found in all the four Vedas. The deva invoked in this mantra is Savitr, and hence the mantra is also called Savitri.

Gayatri is typically portrayed as seated on a red lotus, signifying wealth. She appears in either of these forms:

1. Having five heads with the ten eyes looking in the eight directions plus the earth and sky, and ten arms holding all the weapons of Vishnu, symbolizing all her reincarnations.

2. Accompanied by a white swan, holding a book to portray knowledge in one hand and a cure in the other, as the goddess of Education.

Some of it are grammatically not correct.

The common mistake is using Tanno for all names of deities.

Tannah becomes Tanno if its followed by a soft consonant.

If it is followed by a hard consonant Tannah will not change to Tanno and will remain Tannah.

Hence its not Tanno Krishna Prachodayat but Tannah Krishna Prachodayat becos Ka is a Hard Consonant.

Also the following:

Tannah Sastha and not Tanno Sastha.
Tannah Pitro and not Tanno Pitro
Tannah Shankh and not Tanno Shank
Tannah Sharda and not Tanno Sharda
Tannah Skanda and not Tanno Skanda
Tannah Sauree and not Tanno Sauree
Tannah Sita and not Tanno Sita.

People like me (old and worn out ladies with scores of health issues)
try hard to store and share what little we know with the others.

So We share with everyone since we care for them
and we also care to know how many are willing to share! :)

Health issues are common with aging and one can't do much about it. Please don't consider yourself old and worn out. In fact you old people are treasure pots of experience and are capable of molding a new generation with their immense experience. You are doing an excellent job by sharing your experiences with the people. So we consider you as a treasure of this forum. Cheer!!

Dear Mr. Ganesh,
Thank you for your kind words. I make sure that my aging is confined only to my body. I do not let it affect my insatiable thirst for knowledge. We remain young-aged as long as we keep ourselves engaged usefully in learning! :)

I personally don't think there is a requirement to have multiple Gayatri mantras because the original one that invokes Savitur describes how Brahman or the One exists in infinite multiplicity; and of them all, it is the Inspiring Aspect of the Sun that is venerated as Savitur and asked to direct one's Citta. What matters is, resonating with Savitur, either by visualizing the Sunrise or Sunset, or by recalling the state that was (psychically) transferred by one's Guru while receiving the mantram.

Sir,
Some of the Gayatris are mis-spelt in the message. For example, the Nrusimha Gayatri as in mahaNaarayanopanishad is
vajranakhAya vidmahe tIkShNada{\m+}ShTrAya dhImahi . tanno
nArasi{\m+}haH prachodayAt.h .. 30..
and not
vajra Nakhay vidmahe Tikshna drashtay dhimahi tanno nrusinh prachodyat.
and similarly those for Durga, aditya, surya etc needs correction.

These are part of homas for various purposes, as outlined in the maha Narayana upanishad. Nowadays rarely used, they indicate a period in indian history when such homas used to be widely performed.

The references given below are self explanatory.
So I will rather not waste everybody's time here! :)
