Ganapathi Agraharam and Echangudi village agraharams

Last fortnight ,we visited two beautiful villages viz Ganapathy Agraharam , where a temple for Maha Ganapathi ( hence the name of the village) is located and Echangudi, where a Bairavar temple and ancestor home of Mahaperiyava are located. In both these villages, the Agraharams ( Brahmin streets) are fully occupied with 15-20 beautiful village type houses with flower gardens by Brahmin families. This is quite in contrast with most villages in Tamil Nadu where Brahmins have abandoned ( or sold) their homes and left the villages for livelihood outside. It was a mesmerizing sight to see these two agraharams in the fading evening sunlight with the majestic temples standing high ! Another interesting observation is that the Maha Ganapathi temple is fully managed by a trust of local Brahmin community with the funds donated by larger Brahmin community. There is no interference by the TN HR department or anybody else. In Echangudi Agraharam, the house in which Paramacharya’s mother lived has now become a pilgrim site for Brahmins . Both these villages are located near Ayyampettai and can be reached from Kumbakonam on Thiruvaiyaru road.

Some 7,8 years before i happened to be in this agrahram one day prior to Vinayaka chathurthi and every one in the village together celebrate the festival in the temple premises. Glad you have brought this to this site.
