Fortune smiles on astrologers: UAE seeking Kerala talent

KOCHI: After plumbers and nurses, it is time for fortune tellers to try their luck in the Gulf.

A major dealer of precious stones in the United Arab Emirates has put out classified ads in a local newspaper here seeking as many as 10 astrologers from Kerala who are proficient in 'Bharathiya Jyothisham', are fluent in Hindi and English and are ready to relocate to the Middle East. A walk-in interview will be conducted later this month.

"Shifts can be tedious as a normal one runs from 10am to over 1 am. The astrologers would get a two-hour break between shifts but would have to talk to customers at length about the astrological significance of the stones," said KVK Krishnan, a manager with the firm, which has branches at Karama-Dubai, Albarsha-Dubai and Sharjah, with one at Karama on the anvil.

The salary of the astrologers would depend on their ability to handle customers and make deals.

"They will be paid a monthly income of Rs 50, 000. They will also earn a commission as per their 'performance.' The accommodation for the first two months would be taken care of by the company but they will have to find their own place later on," said a person who responded to the ad.

A manager with the firm said that their customers range from NRIs to foreigners. "There is no need to know Arabic as Hindi is sufficient to handle many customers. Proficiency in English is mandatory as a lot of customers are foreigners," he said.

According to astrologers here, many stick to consultations rather than getting involved in the sale of stones. "When a client approaches me, I would ask for the date, time and place of his birth to calculate the requirement of a stone," said R Sreedevan, an astrologer at Centre for Astrological Research and Development, Ernakulam.
