Dear TBS
You just hit the point. There are several women drivers of share autos on the OMR and ECR.
Some of then toil till 10.30pm, ferrying passengers of all linguistic backgrounds. Some of them
have even picked-up a few words in Hindi and Telugu.
Ladies waiting for a share auto do not particularly wait for one driven by a woman and there are
no exclusive 'Ladies Only' share autos either.
My daughter uses these share autos when she returns from the clinic in the night. Once I was
dumb-founded [ and also relieved ] when one of these lady drivers said casually, " Idhu Dilli Illai Sir ",
when I inquired about her inconvenience and safety in the night.
Paddu Sir, these share autos do not exactly offer the comforts of a BMW/Benz - in fact, one sits in them like
squatting in an Indian toilet - but there is so much going on, that one forgets the pressure on the
abdomen and consequently the rectum. And if ever a co-passenger were to 'pass wind' while in the
share auto, nobody will ever notice - the contraption [ Piaggio Ape ] makes a lot of noise itself, and there is
a very strong cross-ventilation, as all the sides are open - this is one of the 'luxuries' one can't get in an air-conditioned
car, with all the glasses wound up, and so little cabin noise !
Whatever one may say, the concept of share auto is a very affordable, secure and useful mode of transport
- especially in the peripheral areas of Chennai like Ambattur, Mogappair, Ambattur, Tiruvottyur, Ennore, Minjur etc.,
True, erring drivers will always be there - overloading and sometimes rude, but exceptional cases are everywhere.
But overall, the share auto ride is fun - helping one to have a supple body - crawling in and crawling out
of one these will ensure that.
