Indore: With celebrities endorsing pro-animal campaigns, owning a pet has become something of a status symbol. Many Indoreans too are now acquiring pets and dog adoption has become a trend.

Many families and even bachelors and students are adopting strays, while many are acquiring dogs of popular breeds. The most popular breeds that are in demand in the city are Pit bull, Rottweiler, Labrador, German Shepherd and Dalmatian.

Around 15 to 20 dogs go for adoption every month from a single NGO. There are around nine NGOs in the city that work for animal welfare.

Apart from top breeds, the craze for street canines has also increased in the last five years, mainly among middle class families as these are easy to maintain unlike popular breeds, which call for specific requirement and nutritive diet, according to NGOs.

"Around 10-12 stray dogs go for adoption every month from our organization. The number has risen in the recent years and around 25 per cent people prefer stray dogs," said Vaishali Shah, vice president of NGO Helping Hands for Animals.

The procedure of adoption is also completed with minimum effort. One is required to submit a written application requesting adoption along with identity proof and confirmation from all members of the family that they have no objection to the adoption.
"People from all walks of life are coming ahead to adopt dogs. College girls and families have also come forward as they believe dogs are good for security purpose as well,'' said Gunjan Raghuwanshi, volunteer of the NGO Aware..

Importance of training

As most people who choose to adopt pets are first-timers, volunteers from NGOs make sure that they provide adequate training to dogs as well as their caretakers.

Highlighting the importance of training, Shruti Oza from the NGO Aware said, "We have seen several instances where dogs have been abandoned in absence of proper training to handlers. Thus training both parties has become an important part of adoption to ensure the safety of dogs."
