Does a Mahapralaya(Great Dissolution) actually take place in a literal sense?

I sort of find it hard to imagine why would there be a total self destruct mode for creation..what is the need for this?

I do agree that generation, organization and dissolution does take place on small to medium scale on daily basis but doesnt the idea of grand scale dissolution seem wasteful in terms of energy and resources.

Some might say that its Cosmic Recycling and nothing goes to waste cos everything goes back into its unmanifested form but what about the energy expenditure in a Mahapralaya?

The next question is after a Dissolution and when the next cycle of creation begins..where do we begin? Back to cavemen days again or back to the future?

So do we really end everything as in "this tape will self destruct in 5 seconds" style or is a Mahapralaya actually a Mission Impossible made to believe that its actually possible?

It does happen , but the relative timescales are different. We measure ourselves in 1000 or million years, but the planet of cosmos has existed much more than that. Humans does not have the accurate mechanism or actual "Data" beyond a few thousand years.

Also as per Hindu calculations, there are concepts of Yuga, Maha Yuga etc where our years are equated as days for the "Devas" , which means its happening slowly for us, but fast enough for them.

I have another curious question, what happens to the mass of the earth? If we keep sucking oil out and drain the ice, what would be the end result? Will it drown in water, or due to its lost mass will it be "moved" Or shifted off its axis?

We, brahmins ,not only believe, but have faith in religion. Four Yugas are there. Now, we are in the very early period of KALI YUGA,the last one. If we accept all these as they are, it would be easy to reailze ,as the Supreme rules. If we are tempted to ask questions on any subject, it is based on your academic & other knowledge developed during the life time. Universe is ever evolving, Katradu kaimann alavu / Kalladadu ulahalavu new planets, small & big are found in the Universe ? As simple human, that too created by the Almighty have to accept things as we see / read .,
Kaliyugam , lasting for Lakhs of years have completed mere 5000 plus years only .Now itself we witness horrible/ uncivilised/ cruel acts one even cannot imagine have started taking place. It is destined by the Almighty that things in all walks of life would be so unimaginable that everything would go astray, beyond remedy. In the end of Kaliyuga , the last avatharam ( KALKI ) takes place & the universe is destroyed. Lord Narayana orders Brahma to create new world order. Of course Lord Shiva is the destroyer, who does his duty. Most unbelievable acts we are yet to witness ?
However, It is also a fact that in Kaliyuga, no Thapas nor any strenuous acts are required, but simple Nama sangeerthana is sufficient to Moksha. Recite RAM/ RAM/ RAM whenever you like wherever you desire can recite silently. You will have Peace.

Well Varahavatar had actually taken place to put back the earth into its axis/orbit cos it is mentioned that the earth fell into causal waters and needed to be placed back in its original place again...so where actually did earth fall into and why? What exactly did Hiranyaksha do that made the earth go out of orbit?

Yes, Earth can be subsumed by a natural phenomenon- a collision with a large metorite, or explosion in the nuclear plants around the world or a raise in sea water levels...There is already a scientific paper that a brightening Sun will bloat in to a red giant star and ultimately snuff out life in 2.8 Billion years

Study: Sun Will End Earthly Life in 2.8 Billion Years
