Death of TN IPS officer sparks off WhatsApp wars involving an influential former DGP

What pushed an intellectual, idealistic and humane police officer to death?

Five months after a Tamil Nadu police officer, DSP Vishnupriya, was found dead in her official residence, the state was in for a rude shock with an IPS officer now being found dead at the Police Officers’ Mess in Chennai on Thursday at 10AM. While the police suspect that N Harish, a 2009-batch TN-cadre IPS officer, killed himself, the nature of his death is being investigated.

Several media reports suggest that Harish was depressed in recent months and that might have led to his death, but the reasons for his depression remain unknown, and there is much speculation in the media as to why he took the tragic step.

Stress management is one of the topics being dealt with in the over all curriculum of IPS training.

If the death of Harish is due to suicide there could be some other grievous personal reasons.

It is alleged that erstwhile DGP Ramanujam who is now advisor to CM, has given some mental torture to Harish.

Incidentally, it is interesting that the son-in-law of Ramanujam and Harish belong to one and the same batch of IPS.

Whatever be the reason, suicide is no solution to any problem - as his family is left in the lurch with psychological insecurity ! A person with such a good academic record and physical fitness should not have resorted to this step. Rather he should have withstood the pressure / stress and managed it.

Any how, very sad news and Pray for the departed soul.

This news item will throw some light on this issue of Police Pesonnel committing suicide in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu: Suicid among Police Personnel second-highest in India

NCRB data shows that the state has the highest number of cop suicides after Maharashtra. During the period 2006-13, 216 police personnel in Tamil Nadu committed suicide.

Political parties are calling for an enquiry into the death of 27-year-old police officer Vishnupriya to ascertain whether it was a result of work pressure. The officer allegedly committed suicide on September 18 in Tiruchengode at Namakkal, reports the Deccan Chronicle

Media reports state that Vishnupriya was investigating the murder case of a Dalit youth, Gokulraj. The main accused in that case has been absconding. One of her friends who has spoken to the media said that Vishnupriya was allegedly under pressure to arrest some innocent people in the Gokulraj case. She had been upset about the goings-on in the investigation of the murder case.

Excerpt:

While it is not clear if the cause of the suicides of police personnel in the state is solely due to work pressure, it is a figure that is alarming. Some cops, like Vishnupriya, who face work pressure have taken their lives or attempted to in the past. Last year, constable Bommi tried to commit suicide by consuming poison due to excess work pressure. Her request for change of duty had been turned down and she took the extreme step. However, she was rushed to hospital and survived.

Can you please say (if it was reported in the local media either in the past or in the present) as to why specifically this IPS officer was an "intellectual"? What was/is his intellectual accomplishment or achievement?

I find that media is increasingly giving this "intellectual" label to hype up the cases which they want.

If he was an "intellectual" are other IPS officers in Tamil Nadu Lallu Panjus..?
