It will handle cylinder leak calls from users across Tamil Nadu after office hours and on holidays
Starting this week, 1800-425-247-247 could well be the set of numbers mattering most to Indane consumers across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry desperate for authorised, qualified assistance to plug cooking gas cylinder leak.
This is the toll free helpline number of Indian Oil Corporation’s emergency service cell — scheduled to be launched on Monday — that will handle calls pertaining to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leak after office hours and on holidays.
The role of the call centre-based service cell was significant considering that it would receive and forward the complaints to the cooking gas agency and the mechanic concerned. IOC has an estimated 80 lakh customers in the State who are catered to by nearly 475 distributors. The callers would be asked their consumer number, address and contact number. The system would also involve a call to the household sometime later to verify whether the issue had been resolved.
On the advantages of the proposed facility, an official said a common number to call in the event of an LPG leak would make a lot of difference in terms of accessing help faster. At present, the after office hour emergency cell numbers, printed on the receipts issued by Indane agencies, are different for different areas.
So even if a consumer moves residence from one location to another within the State, the number to reach during LPG leaks remains the same. The public sector oil company has a common IVRS number on which orders for refills are placed.
The call centre will function from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. and on Sundays and all holidays. All Indane consumers across the State and the Union Territory, except those in far-flung locations travelling to which in the night involved safety risks, were expected to benefit.
In Chennai, the after office hour emergency service cell used to be managed until three years ago by a couple of Indane agencies. The two distributors, according to sources, used to direct their mechanics located nearby to rush to the household that lodged the leak complaint. Subsequently, the contract for operating the cell was given to a distributor. The cell, which had four mobile numbers, continued to manage calls related to only leak complaints coming from in and around Chennai.
