Chennai and Tamil Nadu brace for Cyclone Nada, heavy rain expected

A cyclone, brewing over the Bay of Bengal, is expected to cross the Tamil Nadu coast and make a landfall at Cuddalore on Friday bringing heavy rainfall, the Met department said on Wednesday.

At present, Cyclone Nada is some 730km away from Tamil Nadu coast and is moving towards the land.

The cyclonic storm will bring plenty of rain in Chennai but not in the quantity that caused the devastating floods last year around the same time. Over 300 people died in the heaviest rains in a century that wreaked havoc across Tamil Nadu in December last year.

Winds up to the speed of 45 km per hour to 55 kmph are expected to pass through Cuddalore, Karaikal and Puducherry when it hits the land, S Balachandran, director at Met office in Chennai, told Hindustan Times.

No relief to Tamil Nadu! Paltry rains this year are a record in contrast with last year's record surplus!

Rain-starved Tamil Nadu hopes for unborn Vardah as Nada dies

The 10cm rainfall received during October-November was the lowest recorded in 150 years. In 1876, the city had recorded 12cm during October-November, as per the IMD. Nada brought less than 8cm rainfall from Thursday to Friday. The showers are likely to continue until Saturday evening but the predicted intermittent showers may not bring much to the city's water sources.

Let us hope the unborn 'Vardah' brings more rain to Chennai...
