Best wishes for Chennai which is celebrating its 375[SUP]th[/SUP] birthday.

The name Madras was changed to Chennai in 1996.

The Hindu has published a separate supplement yesterday. A synopsis of some interesting information about Chennai.

Kapaleeswarar Temple

One of the oldest temples and not clear about who built the temple. Per Nayanmar’s songs the temple might have been built in the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] century by Pallava Kings.

Napier Bridge

One of the oldest bridges and built by Francis Napier in 1869, who was the then Governor of Chennai.

Spencer Plaza

Built in 1863 and established by Charles Durant and JW Spencer in Anna Salai.

Theosophical Society

Established in the year 1882 in 260 acres garden. It is also called as Huddleston Gardens. The garden has a massive 450 year old banyan tree covering an area of 59,500 sq.ft.

Metropolitan Transport Corporation

MTC buses transport 50 lakh passengers in Chennai every day. But, at the time independence there were just 30 Government buses.

Connemara Public Library

Connemara Public Library on Pantheon Road in Egmore is 118 years old. Today it has a collection of 8 lakh books.

Connemara Hotel

In 1903, Higginbotham’s guide to Madras described ‘The Connemara’ as ‘the only one built specifically as a hotel.’ In 1937, all the rooms were provided with attached bathrooms.
Tariff: Single occupancy: Rs.10 with breakfast; Rs.17.80 for room with all meals.

The piano, which is now in the lobby, dates back to 1922.

Thiruvanmiyur : Place of sage Valmiki – thiru Valmikioor

Kodambakkam: Per experts, the name could have been derived from Goda Bagh or Karkodagan Pakkam.

Mount Road is still referred to as Mount Road, although fanatic dravidians (who changed anything and everything to anna) changed the name to anna salai. Does anyone know which road carried the name Edward Elliots Road earlier? Madras Nalla Madras!!! Ingu Medhuva poravanga yaarum illai!! Sariaga thamizh pesa aalum illai!! Aambalaikkum pombalaiikum vidyasam illeengo!! Anniyayam aathadiyoo!!!!!!!! the koovam smells the same (by whatever name you call it)

Irony. A piece of land was purchased ftom ruling descendent of krishnadevaraya by the east India company on 22nd Dec 1639 for building a warehouse. That day promoted by a group of enthusiasts is now accepted as the birth date. But it is very very old rich cultural cluster.

Edward Elliots Road becomes Dr Radhakrishnan (former Presidence) Salai, who lived there.

The same Dravidians changed the name of Greenways Road to DGS Dinikaran Salsi. Is it right?
